Wet Diaper in Trunk!

Post by 2000Silverbullet »

It rained buckets last week.
We had to drive home in torential storm when almost (60 mm) 3 inches of rain fell.

The drive was uneventful other than driving at 90 mph and feeling the hydroplaning. That was scary. Thru up quite a rooster tail. lol

When I got home and emptied the luggage out of the trunk, the trunk mat was wet. Real wet.

That fiber matting under the rug is WICKED for holding water.
Took all weekend over a hot wood stove to dry it out.
Must have been two liters of water in it.

Not sure where it came from. The spare tire well was dry.
The rear light assembly on the drivers side was full of water. I drained it and drilled a drain hole in the bottom. Maybe it fills up and spills into the trunk. :???:

Let's see how long it stays dry.
Another week of solid rain in the forecast.

Likely won't last too long, had the same issue on the outer passenger side. It surprised me at how much the housing could hold, and it took out a turn signal bulb

Tried using silicone on any possible water entry points, to no avail. Wound up replacing the taillight completely with one that's still delaminated but keeps the water out.

The drain holes work. I've done it. Silicone the light assembly as an 'eyebrow' along the top of the rubber and half down each side in addition to the drain holes, and you'll be fine.

Which one was this?

On my '97, it turned out that the seam sealer gave out on the top of the drivers quarter. It would wick up, and gravity would do its thing, directing towards the rear tail lamp. Took me forever to find the leak...

I'm assuming he's talking about the 94 since it's posted in this section, but he didn't say.

Ya, it's the Grizz. Haven't driven the Bullet in the rain yet. :P

The rear lights were both full of water last spring. I emptied them then and siliconed the top and sides.
I had to replace a corroded light socket at the same time.

This time it was only the drivers side that was full of water.

I drilled a 5/32" hole in the bottom of both and will see if it gets wet again. Crossing my fingers.

I just couldn't believe how absorbant that matt material is. Way better than a ShamWow! :eek2:
