Hard brake pedal.

Post by n/a silver bonne »

My 00 SLE has a hard break pedal in the cold. I have almost no movment for regulation, and then the ABS kicks on. The ABS is only coming on on the ice, but there is no distance in the pedal to regulate braking power. The problem last year seemed to go away as they were used more, but this year its all the time. I need to go on a road trip with the car in a little over a month so I need this fixxed. Please advise.

Only in the cold? Maybe you have some moisture in the system that is freezing and plugging the system? Could try flushing the brake system, but I would find a shop that will keep the car inside the night before performing the work and then flush it first thing in the morning. This should ensure that any moisture is thawed and will come out with the flush.

Could it also maybe be some moisture in the booster, causing the same thing? (guy on CarTalk on saturday had a similar problem)

If you've never done a proper brake system flush & refill...now is the time. Not too costly and worth every cent. Look for synthetic brake fluid.

Have you noticed how Brake Fluid is labeled now?

It seems that all Brake Fluid is being marketed as "Synthetic" now. DOT 3 or 4 (Glycol based) is the most common. DOT 5.1 (also Glycol based) is the good stuff (overkill IMO). DOT 5.0 is Silicone based - you DON'T want to go there.

dot 4 is the highest you should ever use in our cars.

NEVER use dot 5 silicone based fluid in a car that calls for dot 3. It will lead to bad things.

Brake fluid absorbs water.
Water freezes.

How cold was it in Alberta?

Oh ya, -50F.

Nuf said.

Change the fluid.
It should be done every two years.
