I recently put a 3.4 inch pulley on my 2002 ssei and have 5* of knock..i'm gonna go back up but should i go to stock size or maybe a 3.5 or 3.6
my mods are
Intense FWI, Intense PCM, NGK TR6 gapped at .60 and a 180* tstat. The knock was not that high before i moved to Minnesota, i didn't account for the climate change..lol
Thanks in advance
James

I'd go with a 3.6, and see what that gets you. I still have 3-4* KR on a 3.6, with an intake, 180* T-stat and AL 605's. My next mods (downpipe and PLog) should eliminate that KR.
EDIT: That's on my stock PCM, BTW.

alright i'd like to have as little as 2* or none. Think i can do that with a 3.6 since your getting 3-4 on it wth a stock PCM? I'd say yes but i don't want more then 2*. Thanks.

It all depends. Every car is different. You'll have less KR, that's a fact.

I'm running a 3.6" MPS from
http://www.smoothflowpulleys.com (local here in MN and Nate is a VERY good person to deal with).
Anyhow, with my 3.6" I'm getting up to 15* KR at times now. Used to be I was getting 9* occassionally, but because it wasn't consistant (sometimes in dead heat I could run a 3.4" with 1-2* KR and then sometimes it'd be 9*, so I switched back to the 3.6" and still no change except for now I think I've found my culprit- rear trans mount).
My mods are ZZP 1.0 pcm, drilled 180* t-stat, autolite 104's (.054"), Belden Max 8mm wires, Intense 3.5" FWI, MM ceramic coated front PEM, Alex Exhaust 3" mandrel bent DP (catless), 3" truck resonator and 3" mandrel bent mid-pipe, Borla ProXS crossflow muffler, ZZP S1 HVTB (72mm vs stock 69mm), ZZP TB spacer, ZZP UDWP pulley, and one or two other mods I can't recall atm.
If we can figure something out with Black Pearl's 02 SSEi for tuning you should make the drive up to Albany, MN for some tuning to eliminate KR and you may be able to run the 3.4" with minimal or no knock -these cars can vary drastically -Black Pearl's 02 SSEi has only a FWI, 3.4" and 180* IIRC and he only has 3-4* knock with stock PCM and exhaust which is VERY RARE.

You are going to have less KR in winter than summer. If you have 5° in winter, you will have 10° in summer. Deal with it now.

Put a stock size pulley on because the air is more dense, plus we don't have great premium gas in MN.

You're right Marty. I looked back to the scan you PM'd me and it was 3-4* at wot in second. Any luck on a file for tuning?

funny you say that because i scanned the car in June using a Tech 2 and only saw 1* when the car shifted...nothing at WOT...think it might be something else? should go back to a 3.6 or go back to stock and start checking the car over?

Your car is seeing more boost than summer on the same pulley, I'm hitting over 10 psi on a 3.6 pulley compared to 8 in summer. Put bigger pulley on or [pull timing

]... P.s. You need more supporting mods for a 3.4 to run kr free w/ decent timing.

ok..i'm gonna go with a 3.6 and see what happens...can i use the stock size belt with it? I don't see the 3.6 listed on the intense website as needing a smaller belt.

and btw thanks for all the help. I'm still new to this whole modding thing and i jumped the gun and went straight to the 3.4. Lesson learned. Once finances are straightened out and all i'll come back to modding this car.

I'm running a 2.8 on pump gas and a Gen V with 0KR. Now take that with a grain of salt because I have mods up the wazzu. But, There is something wrong if you are getting any KR. Tuning will help a lot. I'd narrow the spark plug gap if you are still at .06 and drop a heat range. I'd also check your fuel flow, basic tune up, etc. Bonnies seem to have a lot more issues with KR for some reason and I don't know why. I think it has a lot to do with the PCM and tuning being a lot more conservative.

looking at your mod list, 1st i believe you're running wrong plugs.. you should have colder plugs the AL 104 are colder than the NGR which will reduce the knock a little bit (had same problem with my GP) also i can see you're running a smaller pulley and an intake but no exhaust work, all that extra air going in it needs to go out, so i would really recommend a 3" DP and maybe a Plog (also not sure if bonnevilles have the stupid Ubend like GPs did).
i was running 6 KR* before in my GP and installing AL 104 gapped at .055 helped alot, btw what kinda boost are you having? just wondering what it would be like with stock DP, hope you're not boost stacking
btw im comparing this to my GP which im assuming they are very close to be the same.. if im wrong someone please correct me.

and TR6 is one heat range colder than stock...i am running stock gap though. I'll be doing exhaust in the spring.
Thans for all the input
