OIL & OIL FILTER

My GXP is due for an oil change per the mileage from the last oil change... This will be the first oil change i have done on the car since i bought it last month, I was wondering how hard it was to change the oil (thinking back to how it was to change the fog light) or was it like changing oil in a GP or other GM car. Also What type of Oil filter you guys/gals is running on your GXP? I'm going to use Valvoline synthetic oil..

From what I've seen, changing oil on a GXP, or any other car for that matter, is no big deal. Valvoline synthetic sounds fine, and I'm not sure what the number for the filter is. Make sure you get a high quality filter, Wix, Purolator PureOne, Mobil1 and K&N all come to mind. Make sure you get 8 quarts of oil, as well. Be sure to make sure the old oil filter gasket comes off, and oil the new one. Ask me how I know the first one is important....

Great, Thanks for the quick reply!!! I do all of my own oil changes in the dodge intrepid and our 2003 GP.. Lots O cash saved that way!! Yea, i use Pure One in the other two cars but i may get the K&N oil filter for the GXP!! lol, So how do you know the 1st one is important? What did you or someone you know mess up?

I like to put the biggest oil filter on that will fit.
On my Chevy(V8) I run a 2 qt. filter(3 11/16 o.d. X 8 11/16 L)
the SSEI(3.8L) gets the filter for the 4.3L engine
on your car if it will fit try the L-30005 filter from Purolator(3.78" o.d. X 5.14" L)
check to make sure the gasket is the same dia. or close to it. This filter is bigger in both o.d. and L.

I use mobil1 oil and filters and never have had a problem.

Dad works for an oil company, and they ran a car on mobil1 100,000 miles without an oil change. only filters and top-offs, and it still performed well.

Gotta love synthetic.

First rule about oil filters: DON'T BUY FRAM.

Yea long time ago i learned that Image and Image is no difference..............

Thanks for the reply guys!!!!
I use mobile 1 synthetic in the Intrepid with a pure 1 filter.. In the GP i use Pure 1 with Valvoline synthetic. Well, I thought i would get time to do it today, but def not going to happen... But i'll be at walmart tonight picking up a 5 gt and 3 (1) gt of Valvoline syn oil and go by the Autozone to pick up a mobil1 filter and do it in the morning!!

As you experienced. Real easy on this car, AC PF61 and A LOT of quarts of new oil. :D But a multi-OHC motor will do that. The only thing easier is my LSx motors where the filter is right next to the pan and you can drain the pan and remove the filter simultaneously.

100,000 miles, Thats not many miles. LOL Your right, you can't beat synthetic oil.
I have over 1 milllion miles in a truck and I would use Mobil’s Delvac 1 Synthetic Engine Oil in my truck. Would get over 50k on the Delvac 1 and it would still be good to go more miles, but I like to be on the safe side so I would change it at 50k or 60k. But if you look at the filters on a truck(I had 3 oil filters on my truck) and cut them open you will see that the only difference is the size on the standard filter for the truck. When you put the larger filter on the car the oil goes through the filter slower giving it a better chance of picking up the contaminates. So your oil will stay cleaner, longer.

p.s.can you get Mobil 1 at a good price(cheap)

I accidentally left the old oil filter gasket on a truck, and all the oil dumped out 30 miles later. Luckily it was in the K-mart parking lot, and we were able to get 6 quarts and a filter, and it's still running on the same engine, 6 months later, knock on wood. Oh, and it has over 250k on a 2000 Chev. Silverado 1500 5.3L, and it's only ever had the cheap oil. That's good engineering, as well as good modern oils.

That would be very expensive on my last truck, 48 qt. of oil(12 gallon's). And this is how I would feel :???: :angry4: :sad5:
Glad it all worked out with no damage.

No Rod, he works for BP. I wish we got cheap oil, or even cheap gas.

wow..... While i was at work I came across a lady on the interstate that had just left the walmart when the oil plug came out and all of the oil wasted out of the car while she was driving, and locked up the engine!! It was a pretty new car too!! So she called walmart and talked to a manager and she ended up telling him that she was having the car towed back to walmart and her lawyer will be giving them a call on monday to see what they was going to do about her engine.... Walmart and other places is ok but you got to check behind them!!

That is why I trust no one but myself.

Mobil Delvac is good sh*t for diesels.

That has happened many times at Wal-Marts across the country. One year, the store I worked at had record shrink (loss) numbers at year's end because they had to replace two customer's engines due to not tightening the drain plug on one, and not putting oil in the other.

Like said before. I only trust myself, and I take it as a huge responsibility at work that other people trust me to work on their cars, I don't take it for granted.

Mobil Delvac 1 is good oil, but in our Duramax I use Amsoil. It's going to full Amsoil soon, as well.

At the place where I worked, the new guy did an oil change on an import that had "internal" filter where you unscrewed the filter housing and just changed the filter element itself.Well there is a plastic tube like piece that goes on the inside of the filter,YEAH HE THREW THAT AWAY!!Needless to say the next day the lady is at the dealership with no oil pressure and some nice knocks............

Must've been a hyundai!

THis was the old fashioned way of filtering oil. Way back yonder... Why some mfg's feel it's better than the easily working, easily contained screw on filter that is the norm today is beyond me.

my 04 GXP just tripped 94k, runs great, never an oil issue, have been running conventional Castrol GTX for extended mileage cars, religous about changing oil and filter every 3-4k, i am alittle hesitant to change to synthetic at this stage of the engine's life, ie rumors about developing leaks once switch to synthetic but would like some other opinions, i use Royal Purple in my muscle cars and wondered if i should consider the same for the GXP, any thoughts, thanks, robb in virginia

First off, this is a really old thread, lol.

Secondly, that's all BS. Synthetic oil doesn't make leaks, it exposes them. Since it is more solvent than conventional oil, any sludge that is built up around the gaskets gets eaten away, and any leaks are exposed. However, on your car that shouldn't happen. I ran RP two changes ago, and wasn't impressed for the price. Last change was Castrol Edge, as it had a mail-in rebate, and it was on sale, and this change is Pennzoil Platinum with a K&N Oil Filter. I put the Platinum in both the GXP and my SSEi and it is a very high quality oil for a better price than RP, and as far as I can tell, it's as good or better. If you're just switching to synthetic, you might want to only go 4000 miles, and then change it again, as it will more than likely pick up a bunch of gunk that you don't want in your engine. Also, be sure to run a high quality filter (Wix, K&N, Mobil 1, Purolator PureOne, NAPA Gold, etc). I would recommend the Pennzoil Platinum for your car, but it's ultimately up to you.
