check engine light got it fixed thanks guys

today i was driving down the road and as i was slowing down the check engine light came on just for a second and went off. now it flashes sometimes but goes right off. i plan on doing a trans service to it could that be the problem? the car doesnt seem to bog down cause the light goes right off. any ideas?............thanks

93's wont throw a code for tranny issues. Do the paper clip trick in techinfo and see if there are any stored codes.

i dont have access to a scanner they want 65 bucks at the shop just to look. sorry i dont know what u mean about the paper clip thing, and i looked in the tech link which one do i look at? so u dont think its a trans issue? the check engine light has never came on before, so i kinda worried about driving it alot i drive about 100 miles a day to and from my job. so any thing u can help with i would really appreciate..........thanks for the help and sorry if im missing something.

i dont see a pin in the b slot it looks empty i stuck a clip in the slots shown but it does nothing. any ideas?

ok got the car scanned and it came up dtc 56 quad drivers module b-fault do u have any idea what that is?.........thanks

Could be a fuel issue but I would bet it's a failing ECM.

i read that it is in the ecm and energizes relays and solenoids(egr-boost control-transaxel solenoid) so how can u go about fixing it?

You have two choices.

1 - Change the ECM. The junkyards around here will take them back if it doesn't solve the problem.

2 - Each Quad driver controls up to four devices. Someone with a 93 shop manual will have to let you know which four devices the 'B Quad' driver controls. Once you have that info you can check the resistance of each device. I'd expect all four to be close to the same resistance. If one is significantly different then you need to change that device.

i can get a new ecm for 88 bucks should i do that or is there a way to look into what all the quad driver operates and go one by one to try to fix before i buy a new one and can anyone help me try different things first? ive already dropped a small fortune on this car seems i get one thing fixed and something else goes wrong...how do i check egr,boost control and the transaxel solenoid?..thanks guys, also does the cold air kit i put on maybe have something to do with it,maybe too much air?

You will want to check the 4 devices controlled by "B" or you could end up damaging the same circuit in the new PCM if one of them is bad. If someone has the circuit diagram you can just OHM out the circuits.

i just moved into this area and dont have any real connections as far as shops so just about all the work ive done myself from the advice on this forum. i was fortunate that the guys at napa busted out and new scanner and scanned my car for free so im fixing it all by myself from u guys advice so im not real familar with this car im learning as i go. so all advice i really do appreciate. i love this car and would like to keep it running the best i can seeing how it had almost 198k when i got it and its all org execpt the things ive done sorry so long but just wanted to say THANKS TO U ALL.............

Did you try to read the codes on your own. Sometimes the connector gets mounted upside down and looks wrong. If you can, take a picture of your connector for us to see.

no i didnt the guy at napa hooked it up and the only code that came up was the dtc 56 idont have a scanner i watched him as far as i know it was right. do u mean take a pic of where he hooked the scanner up to?

Yes, on the 93 it still uses the OBD-I system and it can be read in your driveway with a paper clip by watching the flashes from the check engine light. You do not need a scanner to read it.

You insert the paperclip between pins A and B and then turn on the ignition (do not start the motor) and then watch the light. It should flash once and then pause, flash twice and repeat 3 times. Theat is a system check. After that it will flash the same way for any stored codes. Like for 56 it will flash 5 times, short pause flash six times and repeat 3 times with a longer pause between each repeat. It is a pretty simple process.
