Does the PCM store things like mileage, top speed the car has been at and other random records? I have the 98 PA motor for my 89 T, but there was no key or battery when I got the motor out, so I am not sure of the miles and would love to find out.

if im not mistaken, i believe the mileage is actually stored in the instrument cluster and not the pcm. and im pretty sure it does not store high speeds or anything of that sort either.

mileage is a chip on the back of the cluster that can be swapped. AFAIK it does not store any other random records. at least, not anything accessible by you.

Oh. My dad was telling me that he got all that info when he took his Big Dog motorcycle in for service. They hooked it up and pulled of all kinds of info like how many times he hit the rev. limiter, mileage, and top speed to name a few.
Was just hoping maybe the cars PCM had the same abilities.

Nope. PCMs don't datalog....at least, not the '98 vintage ones. The newer GMs like my Impy SS have "flight recorders" though, that log stuff like speed, lateral accelleration, steering wheel angle, brakes....in other words, everything GM needs to keep out of a lawsuit and prove the drivers guilt in an accident.

It's probably not far off though on the higher end models (Cadillac maybe?). Our MINI has the datalogger in the key. When we go to the dealership, all they do is stick the key into a reader ring thing, and it brings up all of our information as well as some vehicle data.
