Try adding a little heat to the mix, but remember you are working around fuel. Just get the plastic warm enough for it to let the metal shaft slide out.

The only ones that have broken for me are aftermarket. The GM ones always pop right out.

Thanks for the tip! I ordered the ACDelco version for my car yesterday. Hopefully there won't be issues. Do you think taking a hair dryer to it would work?

Quick update:

Had my dad hold a T15 driver on the metal shaft while I tapped at it. Came right out on the replacement piece and the one from in my car (maybe I was hitting it wrong when I tried it on my own before?). The lock ring was completely rusted and took forever to get off, so that sucked. I replaced it with a new one that twisted right on. The resistor plate thing that the fingers rub against had a black scuff mark all over it, but it came completely off with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. The re-install was a breeze and now I know how much gas I have left. Couldn't be happier!
