I haven't been on this forum for some time. Hello Darcy - long time no talk! You were the major resource for me to get my system working. THANKS again!

lewis26 PMed me about this thread and I noticed some incorrect assumptions/information. I'll clarify this now:
ddalder wrote:In order to achieve this you would need to swap your head unit to one with a "BAND" button instead of "AM/FM".
Sorry Darcy, this is not accurate. I don't have a band button and I just drove from Seattle to California while listening to my iPod.

The main difference between the head units is mostly the nomenclature on the button. There is a difference in the radio's firmware because of the satelite radio option, but it seems to be in the radio and not something the Class 2 Serial Bus knows about.
Hey hawkejet! Nice to see you here from you again. Yes, with the module you've listed you're absolutely correct. The one I had seen some time back was a plug-in replacement for the XM radio receiver which is why the BAND button was necessary. The software to control XM is in the head unit and only present in radios with the BAND button. The one you used IIRC is a replacement for a CDX and our head units were compatible with these all the way back to the 2000 MY so no head unit change would be needed.

It will send the appropriate signal through the Class 2 Serial Bus to allow for an input that is different than the head unit. You can then have a selector switch if you want to choose from various additional inputs.

Hawkjet, is there a similar device with RCA or 1/8" inputs instead of iPod. This might make more sense for Oldsman so that he can plug in whatever he wants into a headphone/line out port instead of proprietary iPod connector.

It is the same device but a different cable instead of the iPod cable. It is a simple matter to determine which pins are the audio input and splice into them. It's been long enough that I don't remember which pins, but I searched online and found the pinouts for the iPod docking connector....
