Oil pan

I recall seeing and or hearing that the newer L67s or L32 had aluminum oil pans and they fit the series II motors, is this true?

As far as I can recall you can use the aluminum oil pan on a series II.

All 2000+ Bonnevilles have them, and any Series II since 2000 I'm sure..

Not all series II's have them.. I have seen then stamped as late as 04... Had to replace one on an 04 Impy not long ago..lol( Nightmare )..lol

The only thing I can think of is that the oil filter adapter may have to be changed..

Ok I have a friend who works at GM and I will have him get me the pan with his discount. Which year bonnie should I tell him to be a direct bolt up to the 98 L67?

You should be fine with an 00-03 or so... Not sure when they changed the design.. You will most likely need the gasket to go with it unless the new pan has a gaskets included...

You may need the pick up tube as well..

I am not certain of this so make sure you get some good hard answers first...

Yeah the oil filter adapter does have to be changed.

The reason 2000+ h-bodies have the aluminum pan is because the engine mount bolts directly to the pan.

Out of curiosity, why do this mod? Is it just for bragging rights or for a weight reduction? If it's the latter, it doesn't seem like you'd gain that much from the swap.

Because it is a structural member, it stiffens up the lower part of the block and increases reliability.

....and you can safely jack the drivetrain using a piece of wood under the ridgid pan. If the engine is out, it can even sit by itself on the floor......temporarily but not advised if you have a stand.

I'm going to do the aluminum oil pan swap and I'm looking for the oil filter adapter and gasket. Does anyone have this lying around they can part with?

If you want an aluminum pan on your pre-00 H-body, but don't want to change the oil filter adapter, get yourself a pan and pickup tube off a Buick LaCrosse (this one from a 2005 Series 3; the pickup tube is the same as in the 2000+ H-body Series 2):




Like the 2000+ H-body, it has the built-in windage tray; but unlike that one, this one has no gasket at all, just a flat mating surface for a butt-load of RTV:


UNLIKE the 2000+ aluminum pan, this one has a recess in the front, much like the pre-2000 steel pan, that allows you to use the pre-2000 oil filter adapter:


Been running that pan in my 1998 LeSabre for a few months now.

agrazela: Ok so if I get this right I can buy/or acquire an oil pan from a 00+ H body and instead of changing the oil filter adapter I can use a pick up tube from a 05 lacrosse...? This may be a dumb question but what does the pick up tube have to do with not changing the oil filter adapter. By the way know the part # on the pick p tube?

Another shot of the 2005 LaCrosse pan using a pre-2000 S2 H-body adapter.



The pick up tube issue is that the pre-2000 stamped steel pan and the 2000+ aluminum pans use a different pick up tube.

The 2000+ pickup tube is GM PART # 24506437:


That pickup tube will work with either the S3 pan I've shown above, or the 2000-2003/2004 S2 H-body pan the OP bought, similar to this one:


BUT, if you use that style pan, you have to use this oil filter adapter (this is what the OP is looking for):

Just called the dealer and the part # on the oil filter adapter for the 00 bonnie is 12569215. List is $89 but GM parts direct has it for $49.87+.
