4.0 N* Coolant level sensor?

Post by laxmangl »

Well the DIC in my moms aurora keeps telling her the coolant level is low. First we thought it was losing coolant somewhere, but that does not seem to be the case.

After a small scare about Intake manifold gaskets (it has a composite UIM as well and I got worried) we figure it is just the coolant level sensor.

I have heard that its actually part of the resevoir tank and the whole thing needs to be replaced. Is that true?

Had the same issue with my GXP when I bought it. I ended up filling the tank with about 1/2" more of coolant, and the light hasn't came on since.

I have been having the same problem on cold days. The first time I start my car for the day the low coolant light is on but that is the only time. I have checked it and it's just barley below where it should be.

The coolant sensor is a cranky buggy one. I have been seeing alot of newer NorthStar engines now having the coolant crossover gaskets fail. In most cases you see little or no coolant under the car. It first appears as a noticeable antifreeze smell and very gradual coolant loss.

Venom,
Is this a similar problem as in the 3800s? I have been noticing a slight coolant smell and watching for leaks (none yet) and no coolant drop. I assumed this was because the overflow valve is so near the air intake and I don't have a cabin air filter installed. If it is the crossover gasket failing, where would I look to see evidence (other than dismantling the top of the engine).

My crossover was leaking and the puddle was below the pass side radiator tank. I thought it was the hose leaking.
