Engine cuts out.

Post by pete25 »

Ok, it has been really cold where I live (ranging from -10 up to 20 the past week). Just this morning I started up my '03 ssei and it runs for what seems about 30 secs, then seems to just cut out. Once it cut its RPM's in half briefly before returning to normal, then cutting out. I was wondering if it would be something like frozen gas, or a problem with the security system like one of the other recent topics?

Gas doesn't freeze till like, -200 or something. It isn't that. It could be a bad coil, could be a bad battery, does it start hard, or has the starter just clicked, and not spun?

Can you rephrase this? I don't understand what you are saying.

Get a fuel pressure reading and check for vacuum leaks.

If you run your fuel level low, water will build up and form ice crystals when frozen. Add a few ozs. of methyl alcohol to the fuel.

Yeah, I kinda thought about water getting in after I posted. Thanks for bringing that up, Paul.

What I meant to say was, it starts up a little different than during the summer. but once it gets started it runs perfectly fine for what seems like 30 secs. Then the rpm's cut in half and it seems to almost stall. Then goes back to normal idle before finally cutting out for good. It doesn't sputter out it just dies.

Sounds like what's happening intermittently with my car. It didn't throw a code for the longest time but it finally did and it turned out to be the MAF sensor.

I got it fixed at least temporarily. My dad knows a mechanic who suggested that I turn the key in the one position and leave it for ten minutes. Now it works, apparently its a glitch in the security system.

That is WEIRD. I wonder what change leaving the key in the on position would make in the Security system...?

Ten minutes in the auto power off timer used to over ride the PCM security system.
When swapping PCM's the procedure is to do that three times. Because it takes half a hour, it is supposed to deter thieves.
