2000 SSEI broken frame
"all mechanical problems should be posted in the proper forum"
I did not see the forum for an broken frame.hahaha
Will get pic's on tonight. I have NEVER seen a frame do this.
The frame broke on the right side behind were the lower A frame attaches.
It may be broke in half, the car was up on the rack so I could only get pictures from underneath, but from what I could see and feel I believe it is broke all the way in half. I'm glad we put it on a flat bed to take it to the shop, I don't think it would have made it if I had driven it. We bought the car new in 2000 have put 181,000 miles on it, never been in an accident, and the engine cradle/frame broke in two. Anyone else had this type of problem? Or am I the lucky first one again? I always told Cindy she drove with a heavy foot but this is ridiculous. When we get the car back from the shop I will pick up the frame in my truck, bring it home and take good pictures of it all the way around. I will post the pictures I took today later tonight, again I have never seen a frame brake like this.

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
That's incredible. It's pretty rare for a frame to do that, let alone one that was supposedly so strong - GM claimed that it actually broke their frame tester, and they had to use one designed for commercial trucks. Particularly if you haven't been in any accidents to put stress on the frame. Very weird. Maybe being a 2000 it had some manufacturing quality problems that werent quite worked out...
Whats the plan from here?

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
possibly let go at the separtation bolts??
also I beleive the frame was a carry over from the 92-99 (possibly even from 87+) so it was in no way a new design, even if it got a few tweaks in 2000..
also awaiting pics.
EDIT, your pics came just before my post. thats nasty!
you'll just need to replace the frame. and you'll be golden. you got lucky, could have been much worse!

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
It will be interesting to see if you can find the "start" point when it is out.
That is a 3" or 4" box section? I would expect the control arm to fail long befor the sub-frame; there had to be a defect.
How did you notice the crack?

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
OMFG!!!!
I'm an expert at failure analysis ...... in an industrial setting.....but this looks like (without close up micro pics) a fatigue initiated cracking failure. Almost classic.
Look at the geometry of the frame and suspension. I was just yesterday looking closely at almost this exact same point of failure (I currently have the front end on stands with all brake components removed)
Look at the sway bar connection relative to the control arm pivot bracket to frame weld. Notice the radiused (stress relieving) bracket where the weld ends. That's probably where the crack started.
When the engine torques with Rod's heavy foot, it places tremendous stress at that point.
This is such good information for preventive inspections.
Gonna do that as soon as I get home.
It should be easy to design some doubler plates and have them welded on to beef it up.
I wonder if the design changed at all after 2000?

Funny - I noticed when I jacked up my 96 the other day that the jack was actually bending and digging into my frame..

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
Paul,
IT"S CINDYS CAR
and HER FOOT
I will get good pic's once I get the frame home from the shop.
The alignment went bad on the way home from the coffee shop so I thought it may be another bad ball joint.
The next day Cindy got 2 blocks from home when she heard a pop/snap sound and the car would not say in it's lane and this was at 25/30 mph, in 1/2 mile she would have been on the freeway and doing 80/85 mph(it could have killed her and Hillary). We got lucky !!!

Re: 2000 SSEI broken frame
Well THAT explains it Rod.
We're gonna have to give her the nickname......Frame Buster!
Greg, lol ya a little joke but I was serious about maybe the wrong jacking point because you shouldn't be doing frame damage. I jack mine on the frame bolts so no denting or nicks.
A sharp scratch can initiate a crack. The crack will grow over time until the heavy foot of Cindy strikes and pops that sucker in half.
