High Cold Idle

Post by BonneBill »

2000 Bonneville SE, 3800 naturally aspirated. When cold started, idle will range from 1500 to 2000 RPM. When it worked correctly, the idle would start to drop down to 800 after 30 seconds or so. Now it stays at 1500 to 2000 for several minutes. I cleaned the TB and replaced the IAC, but still does the same thing. No codes thrown. No vacuum leaks evident. Am I looking at a computer reflash? Something I've missed? Once it warms up, idle is 800 like normal. Subsequent hot starts have no issue either.

It's pretty normal for cold weather.

It does it in warm weather as well. Before malfunctioning, it only held high idle in cold weather for a minute or less, then started dropping. Now it doesn't.

:laughing3: You should hear all the hissing and idle revving up here in Cold country!

Sounds normal.

What method did you use to check for the vacuum leaks? Did you spray intake cleaner around all vacuum hoses and fittings? Did you include the EGR tubes?

Most things that would cause a high idle would also show up at times other than just when cold. Some other things to check are: the throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and the PCV valve.

Are you experiencing any other problems?

I lost a post here from the data transfer.

You are probable experiencing the high idle from the Secondary Air Injection Pump. It creates a higher idle when it is on, which is about 30 seconds from the time you start the car. Its completely normal.

I have high idle for several minutes as well, unless I rev the car a bit...then it settles. Typically it will start lowering the idle shortly after the rear suspension pump goes off.

But I'm getting high idle for more than the usual 30 sec. My 98 acts normally and my 2000 did until the last month. I'm still wondering if there's a software glitch that needs a reflash.
