Quest for 11s on a $2000 budget

Post by wingman »

Alright, I'm looking for helpful suggestions and ideas. Me and some of my fellow local car club buddys (Nebraska Club Grand Prix) have a friendly bet going with some guys from another local car club that absolutely have no respect for the GM 3800. These other guys believe that Grand Prix's and Bonnevilles, etc. can't be modded to be fast enough to touch 11s in the quarter because the 3800 is a motor that can't make power. Evidently these guys have never heard of Bob Cook and Intense. In addition, this 11 second or faster pass has to be made on a stock 4t65E tranny. I know this will be very hard to do, but it only has to hold together for 1 pass and that's it. Most of these mods will come from our club members and bought used parts.

So here is our plan. This car will never be raced on the streets because that is just a dumb idea that we will never even consider doing; it is just way too unsafe. [-X When we are done building this car, this car will not be street legal and will be trailered to and from the drag strip, but will be built safe so that the driver's safety will not be put into question.

We have a $2000 budget to work with for modding a completely stock GTP. The price of the car will not be included. We have access to a shop that is full of air tools, hand tools, welders, torch, plasma cutter, etc. So here is a list of some of the ideas we've been kicking around.
- Turbo vs Supercharger
- Cam (XPz) vs Rockers
- Slicks vs DRs
- Port heads and everything else
- Nitrous
- Major weight reduction
- Headers
- Race gas
- Tune (one of our club members is excellent at using the HPtuner)

So again, I'm just looking for some other ideas or modification combos that will help us get into the 11s in the quarter using a stock tranny. And like I said before, safety is one of our major priorities.

A local GTP guy ran 11.8's on 1.95 rockers, pacesetters, 100 dry shot and meth injection with a custom tune for E85. Setup also had supporting mods like intake, 103's, 60# injectors etc. It's very possible. look up cornburnin on CGP. He holds the current stock cam GTP record even though there's a lot of fuss and hurt feelings about it right now because "he cheated".

So do you guys slicks be way too aggressive for a stock tranny?? Would DRs be better?

slicks will work on a stock trans but they will definitely hasten the inevitable trans failure

Go turbo that will be the easiest way to the 11's on your budget if you fabricate your own stuff or get a really good deal on used parts. but if you only HAVE to make one pass you could just throw a massive wetshot of NOS along with the porting and weight reduction and that should do it.

Or the turbo AND a massive shot of NOS.

11s are certainly possible, don't know about doing it for less than $2k, though. One prediction though, with a completely stock trans at those power levels, I give you ONE pass before you smoke the input shaft or something else.

X2. Definitely can't be done for under 2k. You'd definitely have to get the tranny rebuilt and strengthened, or you'll have tranny guts all over the ground after the first run.

I think you're going to need slicks. If you got the weight down enough you might be ok. Yes it won't last forever launching hard on slicks but i don't think one launch from a 3800 on slicks is going to kill a 4t65hd. Look at sonomazr2, he ran slicks on his old trans, got it rebuilt and i watched him put a lot of passes with slicks on that trans too and as far as i know it's still fine.

haha....I know this tranny is going to be put under some heavy abuse, but all it has to do is hold together for 1 run and a make at least a 11.99 pass and we win the bet.

Oh boy....keep you're fingers crossed.

Wait, this setup has to hit 11's in it's first pass down the track? that may be harder.

if your friends say that the car cant be modded enough to run 11's they why are they not letting you mod the trans? I change my mind keep the supercharger drop the pulley to like a 3.0, port everything, cam it, gut everything, then do some direct injection NO2 with a progressive control so you can spray off the line with your slicks, if you have KR the -128*F nitrous should get rid of it

A diff and cover can be had pretty easy. That's the only difference HD to regular besides gearing.

Many W body guys go 12's and some 11's on stock transmissions. Sure you'll put a lot of abuse on it using slicks and shooting for the moon, but it doesn't appear this is going to be built at an 11 second daily driver.

Why $2000? Is this your budget or a condition of the bet?
If this is a condition of the bet, what are they putting in the 11's for $2000?

greyhare.....the $2000 was just a number that was pulled out of thin air that is part of the bet.

For more information of this build.....refer to my very first post.

Update: This bet is starting to look like it won't follow through because the guys who initially made the bet are now looking to back out. HAHA....they must be getting nervous.

I'd put that $2000 in the trans first.
