Coolant Rusty...

Post by mshipon »

The coolant in my resevoir is starting to get rusty (not oily). I have a 2000 SSEi and the engine has about 45,000 miles on it. Why is this happening and what do I need to do to get it fresh again?

Thanks!

Could be rust because the anti-rust additives have become depleted or because oxygen has entered the system and accelerated the deterioration of the coolant if it is Dex. Could be a precipitate that forms from the mixing of phosphated coolants with Dex. The cure is to flush the cooling system thoroughly and replace the coolant with "mixes with any" type coolant. Here is a link on how to flush:Reverse Flush your Cooling System
