Newbie Needing Wiring Advice

Post by gorilla1969 »

Hi All,

I realize this is probably an easy (stupid) question but would be of great help to me if you could pass along some info.

I just bought a Dice 'Pro-Install' iPod adaptor for my 2000 Bonneville SSEi with a Bose deck (and 12 CD trunk-mounted player). I've performed simple stereo/speaker installations in the past but need some advice on this install.

The Dice module requires four connections - Black (GND), Yellow (+12V), Red (REM or switched power), and feeds audio through the antenna connector. Do you guys have some recommendations for good wire locations to pull from for the black, red, and yellow wires? I thought about using the cigarette lighter as a possible source.

Please be specific (location, wire colors, etc).

Thanks a bunch.

Regards,

Mark

If this unit is being installed in the trunk, your best bet would be the battery directly. You can buy terminals at checker/autozone that will allow you to connect more cables to your battery. They are avout $4.50 apiece. For remote power you could use the cigarrete lighter in the console (stays on for 10min after the car is off) or stick it in one of the fuses that have ACC only power in the fuse box under the seat. This would keep things simple. If you are installing under the dash I would still run my own power and ground from the battery since almost everything in the dash is connected with ribbon cables. You could then get remote power from the ignition lock and tumbler. I don't know which color wire to use there. I am not sure with the bonnevilles but I have always had problems with cig. lighter circuits. I try to avoid them if possible.

Most likely, this is an in-cabin part, right? How comfortable are you with taking out your radio? You should have those wires right there, and someone with a Factory Service Manual can confirm that. Also, you can go to any store that sells aftermarket adapters for your radio. You don't need one, but look at it anyway to make sure those three wires are there. You can use the radio power without a concern. The black wire can either go to a chassis ground or share the radio's ground. All these wires can be spliced right in. Before you go into the wires, look at the antenna connector. If it's another plug from what you have, you'll need two adapters: one to take the antenna connector from stock to the iPod connector, and the other adapter to take that back to stock and plug into the radio.

Yes, it'll likely be an in-cabin install as the electronic module box is relatively small - maybe 2" x 2" x 1/2". I can break into the radio wires but was trying to avoid this as the deck is a plug-and-play type unit. It literally just slides into the dash and becomes operational through a mating connector in the back of the deck/dash. I was hoping to find some loose wires in the dash which would be relatively easy to splice and connect the needed wires. With antenna connection, I'll be forced to tear into a portion of the connector in the back of the unit to make this work.

You can go off of a cigarette lighter, but you'll lose the immediate power on with the radio. If you don't splice into the REM wire, you can make a switch that would run 12V to it from either the came cigarette lighter source or a new one. Only then the adapter will turn on.

This is on a 2000+ year right?

If so there is no REM wire or 12v. There is just a ribbon cable which is a PITA to work with. Power can be run from the battery up the passenger side under the trim. The trim comes off very simply, just pull up on it. You could get ACC power from the ignition switch by the radio.
