Coolant

Post by UNCCBum »

So for awhile now, the DICs been giving me the "Low Coolant" warning. Now, normally I'd just follow the manual's instructions for topping it off, but I remember hearing something about the Dex-Cool these cars came with originally... is there something else I should do rather than simply topping it off?

It may not even need topping off, but always good to check. GXP 's like to do this randomly at startup. Several members have reported it and found coolant at normal levels.

I have been getting the same thing almost every morning. It was running a little bit low. I called the dealership (I am friends with the service writer) and he said just top it off. He said it was normal to have your levels a little lower (not a lot) once the weather turns cold due to over flow in the summer and then with the lower temps. I only needed about an inch added to the tank.

Your coolant level should never change unless you have a leak or it's being ingested.

However, it's common on GM vehicles to have a faulty coolant level sensor. Every GM car I've owned with that sensor has been faulty and indicates accordingly on the dash. You can either simply unplug the sensor (what I did with our Firehawk) or drain the coolant down, remove the sensor from the radiator, clean it, and reinstall it (what I did with our GS.

If you find that the coolant level is down start looking for a leak. If it's full, start investigating that sensor.

I get the same thing. Sometimes I have a slight coolant smell coming from the front of the car, but it doesn't drip. Whatever it is, it's a small amount and it burns off somewhere on the hot engine. Anyhow, until it gets worse, I will just add a bit every so often to make the indicator go away. I did have a faulty sensor on my 2002 Impala however. Pulled the connector off of the sensor and that was the end of that problem. You probably are loosing a little fluid, if you find out where, let us know!

Same problem on my GXP. Dealer pressure tested and found no leaks, (of course).
He topped it off and sent me on my way. Sure would like to find a leak, though,
if anyone comes up with a suspicious place.
