Wanted: New T55 hub/bearing bolts

Post by StraTact »

I replaced an original front hub/bearing on my 97 Bonneville, after 182,000 miles, and it wasn't easy removing its 3 T55 bolts having severe rust around their heads. I finally removed them by using a butane torch, an 8" plumber's wrench (monkey wrench), and a 5 lb hammer to whack the wrench to get the bolts started turning.

Before using the plumber's wrench, I stripped (just a little) one of the 3 T55 bolts holding it to the steering knuckle, and couldn't fully tighten it later.

Does anyone know where I can order these bolts online? I can't seem to find any.

Thanks but I'd rather get hex bolts (below) at a harware store (price?) or boltdepot.com ($1.32 each) because the old Torx bolts' heads (inside) are nearly worn out due to rust and are very hard to torque to 13 ft-lbs without the Torx bit stripping the inside of the bolt head. I'm assuming that a socket for the new hex bolts will fit through the large hole on the hub/bearing plate.

New Metric hex bolt specs: Class 10.9 steel, 12mm x 1.75mm x 45mm, Max shank length approx 15mm, Zinc plated or Black Oxide finish.

Oh, I'll make sure I use silver anti-seize paste on the bolts to allow for easy removal of the bolts, if necessary.

2 years later, you're still working on this?! :P

I haven't seen the actual application of the 97 style hub, but I'm guessing they use that head style for a reason. A regular bolt head might not clear.
