So, I have an 1998, Oldsmobile 88 LS (L36 based). The car has 55k miles or so and suffered from the UIM failure and coolant hydro locking the motor. Previous owner took it to a shop and had another L36 block dropped in, shop claimed it had a cracked head, blown head gasket or cracked cylinder since it was puking coolant from the spark plug holes. I dug into it, looks like the UIM on this motor failed, or the shop put the old UIM on the new block, that is unknown, but it failed.
I picked up a decent enough looking UIM/LIM from an 07 Lacrosse or something, from an L26 block. Since the thing is just covered in coolant, I am going to pull the heads and LIM from the L36, clean everything up, replace the head gaskets, LIM gasket and make sure everything is torqued right while also installing the L26 LIM since I heard the casting is better (and I can debur the intake at the same time). Currently, not many L67 cars in the junkyard that look in good shape locally and even if there is, getting the ZZP top swap kit, with the Gen 3 parts I would need and all the other ZZP parts would likely run me close to $2000, just to have what is basically an L67 powered car.
I feel like going Turbo is the better answer. Ideally I would make this as bullet proof as possible and I want to work on this when I can, so need to start sourcing parts. Right now I am working on fixing the issues with the motor, then some cosmetic and other items so I can start driving the 88. But when it comes to exhaust, I am getting a bit lost here.
Reading on ZZP's website, they have the equalizer combo kit, but that on an H-Body Bonneville, the kit bolted up, but the crossover contacted the stock intake. Hearing the sound of the Equal Length Headers was amazing, and I would really like to go this route on the NA then turbo when I have everything. Has anybody used the equalizer on an H-Body? What about the other cat back exhaust parts they have? I assume some level of custom fabrication work is required, which I am fine attempting as I have a MIG welder and some experience welding thin material, but it is minimal. Is there a better option than ZZP for this? The Equalizer also comes with the option of a 2.5 or 3 inch downpipe and if wanted you can get the PLOG for the car. Would is be best to get the ZZP PLOG for the front and back, then equalizer then running a 3 inch exhaust? (bigger = better right?). Again, eventual goal would be an intercooled turbo setup. Yes I would get the car tuned for this, but tuning is going to cost me an arm and a leg, regardless if I go to a local shop but HP tuners doesn't even list the 88 under Oldsmobile, but do list the Bonneville, Park Avenue and Grand Prix from 97 ish up wards, so I would assume they could work with the olds. If not, I am stuck trying to source a connection for the PCM that I can use with Tiny Tuner and pray that I can make all that work.
So, I guess the short version here is I want to work on upgrading the exhaust on my NA, L36, hopefully in a way that doesn't require tuning the car and eventually mount a turbo/intercooler and tune the car, but I want everything as setup as I can be prior to pulling the turbo trigger.
Equal length headers/exhaust and eventual turbo?
