I have a 1997 Bonneville SE, and one of the few issues is that the reading on the fuel is wildly out of control. It will usually be read somewhere in the middle when I turn it on, and after driving for a little bit it will either slowly or rapidly climb to the maximum reading. Because of this, I have been using the trip feature to measure how much gas I have, and I fill it to full every 200 miles. This is a hassle, so with my basically non existent knowledge I am looking for a solution. This would be something regarding the fuel level sensor, right? How difficult would this be to fix on my own without experience?
I haven't done much work on a car beyond oil, tires, brakes and jumping, and I'm wondering how I could fix this. Would love responses from more experienced users

With my limited knowledge on the subject, I believe a stepper motor is going haywire on ya. Definitely look into it a bit further, and hopefully some others with much more knowledge on the 9th gen chime in.
If a stepper motor is the issue, you'll have to have it professionally rebuilt. At least, that's what I'd do, since you and I have the same experience with working on cars.

Sounds like the fuel level sensor, which is a potentiometer. You'll have to drop the exhaust and the gas tank to replace it, from what I understand.

95 SLE... a keeper. 241k miles. Low and Slow.
