boost gauge concerns

Post by oldskoolie »

My first boosted car. 94 SSEi. Boost gauge reads well below -5 lbs running down hiway under minimal load. Passing it might make it to 0. haven't seen it half way between 0 and 5 showering down on it. Where should I start? Appreciate any insight.

Hi. It should get up to around 7 or 8 when you floor the pedal. You could have a vacuum leak to the little black cylinder (boost control actuator) that opens the wastegate or a bad boost control solenoid, the little black box a couple inches away.

You can start by taking the vacuum line off the bottom port of the actuator that runs to the solenoid and see if the boost goes up higher. If it does, the solenoid is probably bad.

Found vacuum leaks at 2 places. No it won't start. Get back in that in a few days. Thanks for response. I found 2 f/pumps, ign. module, cam sesor and crank sensor in trunk of this car. It intermittently dies, but always fires right back up. Well this time a loud hum came from trunk area and now it won't start. Will check power to pump tomorrow.
