Starter recommendation

Post by Calion »

I may need a new starter for my 1999 Bonneville SE. Any recommendations on where I can find a decent one for relatively cheap? And can/should I replace my existing one with a smaller, gear reduced one (if that's not what I already have; I haven't gotten in there yet)?

So I’m actually going to replace the starter now (darn thing’s been sitting in my driveway all this time waiting for me to get around to fixing it)…

Any advice on which starter to get? I got the old one out and took it to AutoZone and they say the solenoid’s shot…

Get an ac delco or many of the rebuilt units. Don't worry about the gear reduced version. It costs a fair amount more, and really just helps with the extra drag of the supercharger.

For what it's worth I think all the newer 3800 Series 3 engines came with gear reduced starters. So if you get one for a 3800 Lucerne, it should be gear reduced. I do agree though that either would be fine.
