help, car die while driving now wont restart

Post by grandprix95 »

hello, dont know if this is he right place for this or right forum.

got a 95 pontica gran prix, that stall out while driving, like someone turn the key off, battery light was on, thought the alternator was back so i took a hot battery to get the car the rest of the way home, but all it will do is just click, everything bright, battery is at 11.82volts

i know a bad alternator would cause the car to die, but being the battery was still hot, i dont think its the alternator.

Put a new or verified fully charged battery in. As long as it's connected properly it should start fine. If your lights dim or the car dies then look at the alternator.

11.82volts? When did you get that reading?

that battery may be going bad - see if you get a circuit from + to - neg terminal: you should not have a complete circuit - if you do get a path it indicates an internal short - probably the plates are warped and touching from overcharged condition - replace battery

also do a voltage drop test on it - see how fast the volts decrease when load is placed on it. if it wont keep a good charge then replace it
