97 Bonne completely dead
97 Bonne completely dead
Got a 97 Bonneville SSe 3.8, about 160k miles, a little rough around the edges but runs (ran) fine. Replaced the battery last week, now I have no power inside the passenger compartment. It's hot to the starter and alternator, but no dome light, horn, etc, and no start. Cables are clean and tight, all grounds I can find look good. Running out of ideas, any suggestions?
Thanks
Thanks

hi, if the battery is fully charged, I would look at fuses and relays

Battery is new, fully charged, all maxi fuses and relays look good, haven't found any blown fuses under the dash

ok, IIRC my 96 had two wires going to positive terminal of battery: if your is the same, are they both connected and do you get good 12v from both + wire mounting points?
is the cable going to maxifuse centre secured properly and do you get 12 v at the mounting point?

Both positive and negative terminals at the battery have 2 leads. The the main positive cable goes to the starter, the other to the alternator, both have full voltage. The negative goes the the block, and a body ground, also good. All wires to the maxi panel seem secure

Check for power to the ignition switch and make sure your ground cable is good. Disconnect it and put a multimeter on voltage between the negative terminal and the ground wire.
A temporary fix does not exist. It becomes a solution until it needs to be fixed again.

Re: 97 Bonne completely dead
Ditto with my 97 Bonne. Nothing happens when I try to jump her. It has been almost two weeks now. It has finally warmed up to freezing so I am going to try to remove the battery today. I will start a new thread so but found it ironic I was about to post my Bonne is dead and this was the first post here....

please check for power at the maxifuse centre - remove a fuse and see if you get 12 v

Re: 97 Bonne completely dead
in one of your posts you stated that there are two cables off both positive and negative battery cables, there should be three off the positive terminal. I assume there probably is but am posting this just to be sure. the third cable you did not mention goes to the maxi fuse / relay panel. as someone already stated, you should check for voltage at the relay panel. the third battery cable terminates there.
Re: 97 Bonne completely dead
Dee dee dee... for the positive battery cables I forgot what order I took them off yesterday. Due to major rusty on the bolt I had to wait for pb blaster before I removed the dead battery. Now I am hoping to install the new one but want to make sure I put them back in the right order. Does the bigger one go on the bottom against the battery, then the smaller one with one cable, then the bolt then the plastic cap that is on the bigger cable? Rather than trying to make sense out of that sentence, could someone direct me to a pic of the positive battery cable installed. Google just took me to pics of the cable for sale etc.

my battery cables are not OE. I had to re-terminate because of corrosion. the above link may help. the important thing is to ensure a solid electrical connection from battery to terminals. also torque the battery cable bolts to 11 foot pounds. I found that if I guess at tightness I underestimate the torque. I think I am afraid of stripping the battery or bolt threads without using torque wrench.

Thanks guys for the advice. I just tried it one way, did not work. So I put them in the other order and it worked. Yay, my car is running again but... I think I should stop hijacking this thread and start my own.
