Intercooling without the buck teeth over bite look?

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Intercooling without the buck teeth over bite look?

Post by Ultra Magnus »

All of the 2k+ Bonsters on here with intercoolers seem to all suffer from the buck tooth over bite look. I'm talking about the way the heat exchanger sits below and out of the bumper. There has got to be another way. A different dimension heat exchanger perhaps? Sorry that people will get offended by this post.

I've seen this done on turbo Trans Ams of the 4th gen vintage.. They cut out the plastic for the fog lights and license plate and stick the IC behind there. You can't really hide it away, it needs airflow.

I don't think anyone will get offended by this post, it's just the nature of the beast.

While it might not be the greatest airflow, the GXP bumper hides it pretty well IMO.

I believe I was the first 2000+ to hang down the IC below the bumper. Given the design of the front bumper there is no other way to get the Heat Exchanger in the air and effectively cool.

Your only other option is to hide it behind the upper grills. I chose both BTW

Thanks guys. I'm used to the old Clubgp crew. Say anything remotely offensive and crybaby especially get all upset.

2003, did you ever run the top one solo? Have any data you can tell me?

Haro, are you running twin HE like 2003 is? If so that really demonstrates the bumper differences.

No I never did, there are smart people that figured out to have a max efficiency system that you need at least 1.5 times surface area in the heat exchanger as the surface area as the intercooler core. Only one heat exchanger does not fall under this principal.

I can tell you that I ran smaller pullies (2.7) and a lot of timing (22*) on Rockers, and an gen V Intercooler than anyone else.

I went 12.50 @ 108 with 1.9 Rockers, SLP headers, Gen V and Northstar as my mods. it made 313 whp on a dyno jet. There are many Cam guys that don't make the HP I did

It isn't anywhere near as apparent in person. I honestly thought the same looking at 2003 SSEi's photos with the heat exchanger hanging below the bumper looked pretty ridiculous. But having seen his Bonneville in person a few times, it's really not bad at all. The pictures make it seem more obvious than it actually is. For comparison though, I'm running the same HE as haro on mine. I need to revisit how mine is mounted though, those straps I have look like a gap between teeth, hahaha. And that's my trans cooler above.

You can get a custom sized heat exchanger and paint it black.

You can always cut out your license plate area and fog lights! Image sorry for the horrible picture literally just finished this tonight. I love this look way more than hanging down.

^ That is what I've seen on the 4th gen Trans Ams, and what I wanted to do to mine while turboing it was still in the plans.

I love the trans am with the fronts cut out, which is why I decided to go this route! But I am running it to some minor issues like the fmhe hitting the inside of the bumper slightly. Still able to get put back on but might have to drill some new holes where the underneath splash guard sits.

Honestly the bottom splash guard is worthless, mine has been off for at least 6-7 years now
