Re: aftermarket radio problem
Yeah, that's kind of the kiss of death for an aftermarket radio. There's really no reason to ever cut off the OEM harness. Some of the wires have similar colors, leaving it really easy to miswire your radio. Because you did that, pretty much nobody on the forum will be able to help you, as your problem is almost guaranteed to be that you miswired it after cutting off the harness. Only you are going to be able to work it out by trying to work out which wires you got wrong. An aftermarket harness makes all of that very simple, which is kind of why people use them. Sorry if this is harsh, but there's a rich history of people coming here with "I cut of the harness and I can't get my aftermarket radio to work" stories. It can be anything. An interior dash lighting wire that reads ground when the lights are off, that you test, read it as a ground, use it as a ground, then when you use the radio with the lights, the radio dies. That sort of thing. Could be literally any wire connected up wrong.02bonnevilleee wrote:I should probably add: I cut off the stock harness and wired it straight from the radio wires to the regular radio wires; I didnt use an aftermarket harness

Apparently they have "Reverse wiring harnesses" now. You can get one and put your harness back the way it was if you can match up the correct wires, then use a normal aftermarket radio to GM harness to connect your aftermarket radio.

Re: aftermarket radio problem
Kind of wish I had seen that earlier, I could have used that to make an extender for the stock radio since the dock was cut out of the dash in mine to make room for the PO's Alpine deck...though I have plans to upgrade to a modern stereo anyway now.
But I agree, cutting the harness when an adapter is so prevalent and cheap is just shooting your own foot. All you can do at this point is try to figure out what goes where, or run all new wires to the speakers and power.
In regards to aftermarket radio installation, you'll need to run a dedicated 12v ignition switched wire to the radio to get it to work anyway if it's a ribbon style like my 2000 SLE. I had it running off the 12v light source and couldn't figure out why the danged thing worked last night, but not this morning! Duh, twilight sensor turned the lights on and provided 12v to the stereo! No lights needed in the morning!

A temporary fix does not exist. It becomes a solution until it needs to be fixed again.

Re: aftermarket radio problem
Because of such issues that is why I am a big fan of leaving things stock as much as possible.
When you start cutting off the stock harness you are asking for problems.
I would suggest getting it back to the way it was before and start there.
