Code p1441

Post by theax40 »

Hey guys,
I have an 03 SSEi and I've had an SES light on for a few weeks now. It was originally accompanied by a check gas cap message. I bought a new cap and that fixed both lights for a few days but then the SES came back, no gas cap message though. Scanned it for codes, it was showing p1441 EVAP EMISSIONS SYSTEM FLOW DURING NON-PURGE. I checked to see if the evap purge solenoid located on the back of the engine was functioning. Hooked it up to a hand pump with a pressure gauge and the valve was holding no vacuum. Tapped on it with a screw driver and helped the valve to seat and hold a vacuum. So I went ahead and replaced that but the SES light is still on. Should I move on to replacing the evap canister solenoid located near the gas tank? All vacuum lines under the hood look good without any cracks so it would appear that theres no leak coming from that type of problem. I'd just like some advice before I throw more money at parts that potentially won't fix the issue. Thanks.

First, I'd double check the purge solenoid to be sure the new one is working.
Sometimes the canister deteriorates and bits of charcoal get sucked out, jamming the purge solenoid.
If the lines to and from the canister are good, and there's no damage to the canister, then your problem is likely to be a faulty canister vent solenoid.
This solenoid is normally open but closes for the PCM to do an EVAP system test.
If it's not bad, then it's either a wiring fault or a bad circuit inside the PCM.

Did you clear codes? If not then the car will have to run the EVAP monitor several times, and pass it before it will turn the light off on it's own. That could take a few days. A bad vent solenoid doesn't normally set a P1441. Charcoal can definitely can get into the purge valve though. A small inline fuel filter spliced into the line between the valve and the canister cures that.
