Just bought my first car... 96' Bonneville SE (Supercharged)

Post by Dcastillo13 »

:canada:
Just bought this bonnie for $600 in Toronto / 210,000 KM on it (130,000 Miles)
The guy i bought it off of purchased it and drove it in Florida up until last year and its been sitting ever since.
Took it home got it cleaned up, got it e-tested but still needs to be safetied, the ministry wouldn't even give me temp. plates because the car is 'unfit' simply because the car has never been registered in Canada.
What needs to be done?
From what i know the SE trim didn't come factory with a supercharger, must have put it in after :bwoohoo:
What it needs to pass safety...
- two rear brake drums
- leak in catalytic converter (I'm just going to put a whole new exhaust system)
- Leak in my rear wheel cylinders (not sure what needs to be done, probably a flush)
- Needs new stabilizer link bushings
- Passenger door won't close, latch is loose
- Day Time Running Lights
- Battery clamp
- Chip in windshield
- New tires
It needs a bunch of other minor things but I'm excited to get this thing on the road. Im not a mechanic or anything like that but I'm learning and hopefully with the help of you guys i can turn this car into a beast. Tell me what you guys think!!

Welcome to the club!

You've got yourself a rare bird. Very few SEs came supercharged. Overall car looks pretty clean!

I wasn't aware that you could even get an SE supercharged..I thought that was left up to only the SSEi's. It's not an SSEi with SE bumpers on it and debadged? If it's truly a SE supercharged, then you got a mild sleeper there....awesome find.

The rear brake cylinders leaking is most likely going to require replacement of the rear brake cylinders. Fear not! Other than bleeding them, they are really quite easy to do unless you have brake line problems ( brake line won't disconnect without twisting the brake line ). Get lots of penetrating fluid on those brake line fittings and consider investing in at least a propane torch. Heat is your friend on those stubborn non rubber brake parts. I have a small MAPP/OXY torch you can still buy for about 60 bucks by Benzomatic that I use to get stubborn brake bleeder screws loosened with. It's my little heat wrench since I can't justify having a full blown oxy/acetylene torch.

From what I see on your list, everything is fairly simple short of the exhaust work. Pics don't show up for me though I would love to see your car!

Yeah neither did i. Im not 100% but i don't think it's an SSEi debadged, based on little things like no HUD or 8 speaker audio system.
I'll be making a post and documenting everything on here when i get started, i'll need help from the community! thanks for the advice man.
Im going to try to re-upload the pics using a different format too...

Yes. in that generation there were a few L67 optioned SE's (I think that there are some threads about it here). Again, like Carl said, it was a RARE option... So that alone makes it a very unique car. That doesn't make it more valuable per-se except amongst Bonneville/3800 enthusiasts, so don't expect to make some rare barn yard like classic find and profit from it...
