2003 SSEI cradle bolts stripped?

Post by Bonneville'sRock »

Took my 03' Bonneville SSEI to a shop today as there is a loud "bonking" when accelerating and sometimes on a quick stop. (recently replaced front and rear engine mounts...didn't help)... Shop says it appears the cradle is moving round and the bolts that hold the cradle in place are stripped. Shop says the bolts fit into nuts that are welded into the body.... above the cradle..... and they were not sure it could be fixed? Anyone have this happen...can it be fixed?

There has been many on this forum that have had the welded nut area
of the subframe rust out and completely lose the body mount and bolt.
Most cars in the rust belt area of the country where a lot of salt is
used on the roads.

Removing the subframe will allow this to be fixed, but it will be costly
in time or money. I think you can search the forum and some pictures
of guys doing repairs to theirs were posted in the past.
