I was thinking that the gasket could be a problem. I need to find one of them somewhere. Both of the used ones I have look decent but I am sure it could use a new one.

the best way is to perform a propane test -One puts nozzle of propane near all vacuum lines and intake manifold, egr and throttle-body and see if idle changes.
the car needs to be running for this and if idle goes up, you have leak that is sucking in the propane.- do small areas at a time to pinpoint the leak.
Interesting, so is this what I do?
1) Start car and let it settle down to a consistent idle.
2) take propane tank and open the nozzle
3) put open nozzle (essentially propane leaking into the air) next to certain locations
4) monitor for increased idle/RPMs
Am I understand correctly?
yes that is exactly what you do- essentially, the vacuum leak sucks in the propane and increases idle speed
poverty forces one to do unorthodox things

Reusing gaskets is never a good idea.markpelly1 wrote:I was thinking that the gasket could be a problem. I need to find one of them somewhere. Both of the used ones I have look decent but I am sure it could use a new one.
It only takes a fraction of a millimeter sized gap to suck in air.
Good thing 96 SSEI noticed.
Shouldn't be tough to find at all.
Rockauto, Amazon, GM dealerships should have
ACDelco 219-333 GM Original Equipment EGR Valve Gasket
A number of aftermarket companies make them, too
Fel-Pro 70783 EGR Valve Gasket
Standard Motor Products VG46 EGR Valve Gasket
Standard Motor Products VG214 EGR Valve Gasket (same thing with a screen added)
Victor Reinz G31276 EGR Valve Gasket
Airtex 3F1013 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Plate Gasket
