Car stutters

Post by Colbias18 »

Hello I recently bought a 92 bonneville ssei and the car seems to stutter while I am accelerating, Usually when i hit 60.
It seems to do it with each mile an hour increase, I think it might be the TPS or perhaps a vacumm leak.
I was just curious if anyone else has a had a similar problem.

Welcome to the forum!

There are many things that it could be.
Plenty of people don't keep up with the maintenance on their cars and even more so when the cars get older.

First I would check and replace the following, as needed:
Air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve and spark plugs
It's also good idea to pop the hood and look at the spark plug wires after dark because it makes it more apparent if they are arcing.
If sparks are jumping around, then replace the wires.
Secondly, I'd check the computer for any codes that would point to a problem.
Next, I would clean up all the ground connections both under the hood and inside the car.
There are 2 "ground buses" inside the car underneath the carpeting 1 on the driver's side, the other on the passenger's side.
Many troubles can be resolved by making sure these ground connections are clean.
More details on the buses here;viewtopic.php?f=19&t=30286

The throttle plate and sensors often are gummed up and they benefit from a good cleaning with the proper cleaners. (Special MAF cleaner is needed to keep from ruining the MAF sensor)
Good guides are here http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/gm/3.8 ... f-sensor-1 and here http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... m.php?f=38

Vacuum leaks become more common over the years as the seals shrink and hoses become brittle.
