ABS & Trac Off lights...C1217

Post by beater98se »

Hello all, since I bought my car it's always had the ABS and Trac Off lights staying on, but I bought the car with a blown brake line and an empty master cylinder.

Brake lines are now fixed but the lights won't go off. Scanner picks up a C1217 Brake Pressure Modulation Valve (BPMV) Pump Motor Relay Circuit Open.

It had also stored a c1243 "" "" "" Pump Motor relay stalled

I checked the 40a fuse under the hood which was blown so I replaced it with the spare. I started the car and the lights were gone. Wooo

Just started it again and the lights are back on. I tried disconnecting the battery and draining power from the system but they still come on. I would just say screw it and disconnect the ABS alltogether but I need to get the car safetied and would rather not give another reason for the car to fail. Has anyone else solved this sort of issue? :banghead: I've been trying to determine where the ABS relay is, or if there even is one.

Hi, if there is an abs relay, it probably is in the maxifuse box bolted to firewall in front of passenger...... that's where it was on my 96 ssei....

I fixed the ABS pump problem on my '92 SSE that the dealer wanted $1800+ to fix by replacing the ABS pump relay for $12 in the fuse relay panel on the firewall. I don't know where the relay is for yours, but I strongly suspect user "96 SSEi" knows. If it's not there, get the owner's manual out. - BC

I don't see the maxifuse in there but it has the one under the dash.... I parted with my 96 so I can't take pic for you ..... sorry man!

The link don't seem to work for me but you can Google 98 Bonneville se manual and find it on the site
Give me the *dang* manual.....lol

Ok, this pic seems correct and it seems your relays are missing along with fuses and the headlight breaker.

I couldn't find a label anywhere. I assumed by that link the 2nd from the right on mine is the ABS. Theres only 4 connectors in the harness and judging by the amount of dust in there it's always been like that. Perhaps in later years they're that way, not to mention it's only an SE. I switched the horn relay with the ABS, and it did the same thing. The horn works with the ABS relay so it kinda rules that out. :banghead:

Hi, according to the pic, the 3rd and 4th are for abs, the first and second are cooling fan relays. Yes from the right.

I assumed from the pic that 2nd from the left was horn, which i confirmed it was. Wouldn't the last one to the right be the cooling fan relay, or are they both for ABS?

From the pic, it says from the right is cooling, cooling, and then two abs, so the abs is third and forth hole from right then the blower motor is fifth hole from right.
So from your pic, the fourth hole is empty, put working relays in the third and forth holes from right and see if it fixes the problem

Please keep in mind that the first relay hole on the right in your car is empty, the relay is missing for low cool, the next one to the left of it is high cool, you have that one. The next to the left is abs relay and the one to the left of it is where you have to put the working relay. Put the horn one in there.

I switched the horn relay with both of the right side relays and it still gives me the same problem. I've confirmed that the horn relay is 2nd from the left. Those relays also work with the horn circuit. I've discovered a solution to the problem, and that was pulling the ABS and Trac bulbs out of the cluster LOL. :dontknow: From service information I'm pretty sure the problem is inside the ABS block or EBCM and don't feel like forking out a couple hun on a $600 car. Did some reading and asking around and I don't think Ontario standards require ABS, just working brakes in good condition. (If anyone can elaborate on this) Just have to be more alert on slick roads. Thank you everyone for the help.

Hey, as long as you don't need a safety certificate, you should be fine . Keep the car insured and be very nice to your emission guy. My insurance, rbc, requires you to get safety if you are uninsured for a month or more.... winter snow will be here soon so take it easy and don't use 'slicks'......lol

I bought the car as is so it does need a safety. Had a blown brake line and front brakes were in piss poor shape. As well as 7 holes I had to patch lol. I don't think they hook a scanner to it for a safety. Problem is my insurance company won't cover the car without a safety because it's so old :ballkick: I've also got like new winters on rims. My impala was unstoppable with them and I'm sure this car will be too (heavier)

My suggestion is go to mechanic for safety and say nothing about abs..... you should be ok if brakes work fine and there is no play in peddle after engine is turned off- they will depress the peddle and turn the car off to cut brake boost-the peddle should not move any further with same pressure applied to peddle.
Think positively man...... good luck

From TC website:

Does Transport Canada have a safety standard for ABS?

No, not for ABS alone.

Transport Canada does have a standard for effectiveness of a vehicle's intact brake system, which includes braking performance in case of a failure of part of the system.

~

Thanks, I will keep posted. Will probably start a thread on the project after it's on the road.

I have this exact layout on my 96, 2 right, 2 left, does anyone have a schematic that tells me for sure which is the ABS Relays?
They move things drastically from yr to yr, maybe they located them near the ABS pump?

How hard was it to get to the cluster bulb and remove it?
On my 90 SSE I had to remove the entire dash & cluster, I hope this 96
is not the same.
