Press mode a couple times to get the DIC to be blank.

Check your grounds and all that, plus battery cables. Loose ones can cause all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for replying. the warning didn't show up today and I did nothing. The battery cables to battery are snug. are you referring to grounds under carpet on drivers and pass front? Thanks again

If it's just an occasional thing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's one of those gremlins that like to come out and play, just because it can. It normally happens when the weather is cold, but it has shown up in warmer weather, generally when there has been some change. If you search, you'll see several posts regarding it.

Funny, mine had both the service theft and check gas cap messages, replaced gas cap, both went off. Was someone stealing my gas and I didn't know it?

Update...... I performed the test in the owners manual for theft system..... car off, window down, lock and arm alarm, reach in window and open door...... nothing happens, no alarm at all, no lights or horn.
It works when I press panic button, red, on remote.

Did you try it with all doors, or just the driver's? Just curious as to whether it would make a difference. Perhaps you have a problem with the system. It will likely have to be scanned with a Tech 2 to see if a code has been set. I found the TSB regarding the original problem.
BULLETIN NUMBER:
00-08-56-003

SECTION:
08 - Body and Accessories

DATE:
March 2000

TECHNICAL
SUBJECT:
Theft System Warning Message Displayed on Driver Information Center (DIC) (Reprogram the Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Module)

MODELS:
2001 Oldsmobile Aurora (Built prior to VIN Breakpoint H414103152)
2000 Pontiac Bonneville (Built prior to VIN Breakpoint Y4211555)

CONDITION
Some customers may comment that the SERVICE THEFT SYSTEM (Bonneville) or THEFT SYSTEM FAULT (Aurora) warning message is displayed on the DIC. The SECURITY telltale indicator may also be illuminated.

In addition, one or all of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1009, B2734 and B2947 may be set.

Important: This condition does not represent an actual system failure.
CAUSE
This condition may be due to the vehicle security status signal inputs to the VTD Module being corrupted and setting false DTCs (B1009, B2734 and B2947) and causing the SERVICE THEFT SYSTEM (Bonneville) or THEFT SYSTEM FAULT (Aurora) warning message to be displayed.

CORRECTION
If one or all of the DTCs (B1009, B2734 and B2947) have been set, reprogram the VTD Module. Use a scan tool to perform the following procedure:

Important: The Tech 2 scan tool software version 20.003 or later (North American Operations) required for reprogramming the VTD Module is available from Techline on the TIS 6 Data CD and later.
1. Select F0 - DIAGNOSTICS.
2. Enter the appropriate vehicle information (model year, vehicle type, service category).
3. Select F1 - BODY.
4. Enter the appropriate vehicle information (carline, carline series).
5. Select VTD.
6. Select F2 - SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
7. Select F0 - DTC MASK.
8. Select DONE.
9. Select SAVE OPTIONS.

mine gives me a Service Security System light in the mornings when its COLD outside. it goes away.. figured it was a bad solder joint in one of the security system computers or some crap.. Hasn't caused a problem other then the light occasional on in the morning of a cold day so i ignore it.

The dealer to at least diagnose where the problem is. Then, you can decide whether to have them fix it, or do it yourself. Perhaps the fix for the warning going off that is listed in the TSB will fix the alarm problem.

If you know of someone with a Tech 2, that would be another option. Good luck with it all. I hope that it's an inexpensive fix. Let us know what they find.

I tried the door test to check the alarm. Mine did not work, either. I do the procedure listed in the TSB, but that did not change the result. It appears is if just shuts off the reporting of the DTCs.

Edit - I'll try the door test again, later. Reading up on the system, I don't believe that I waited the 30 seconds it takes to fully arm the system once the doors are closed and locked.

would the cold weather cause the warning light to continually be on for as long as the car is being driven?

Yes, and it won't reset until the car is restarted.
