1991 SSE keyless remote

Post by essikr »

How do you program the receiver for the wireless remote.I can't find any information for a 91.It has the ALDL connector under the dash.I know on newer models you use a jumper betreen to of the pins. Is this how it's done on a 91?
I tested the remote at a parts store and it is putting out a signal.I want to try and reprogram. Also I would like to know where the receiver is located. Thanks for your help. :beerchug:

I believe the process is similar, but the terminals you need to get to are clipped just to the left of the glovebox. I believe when the glovebox is open, you should be able to squeeze it, and that will let it come all the way down, and it will be just right there.

I also believe the Remote Keyless Entry Module is in the same area there.

Found it right where you said! My remote didn't program the receiver . When I jumped the wires it cycled the door locks, pushed the button on the remote and nothing happened. I tried it several times ,remote still doesn't work. Since it is putting out a signal I suspect the receiver . I looked in the same area as the wires but didn't see anything that looked like a receiver. I can't tell where the wires go. Anyone know where the receiver is,what it looks like or had any exoerience with one.
Thanks for the reply help finding the wires! Now where is the receiver???

I think you are supposed to hit a particular button on the remote, but I don't know what it is.

Have you tried new batteries in the remote, and then programming it again?

Somebody with a factory service manual will have to pinpoint the exact location for us, I think it is someplace behind the radio, but I could be wrong.

I put new batteries in it, tried all three buttons. Do you think your supposed to hold more than one down at the same time? I tried holding one down for over 30 seconds. I have had my radio out before ,going to pull it and look in that area for the receiver.Hope someone knows where it's at before I do.
Another thought ,if I do find it how do you test it?????

Ok,I think I may have found it! Is it a TRW part white 1 1/4 square about 4 inches long.I took it out, everything else seems to be working. It was behind the glove box in the rt corner attached to the relay fuse block that is there. The numer on it is 25557059.
No listing for this part at any of the parts stores. I'm sure this is a dealer part only. Looks like this is a scrap yard visit. Can anyone verify that it is the receiver??

Jump the glove box terminal, then hold the lock button down on the remote, until the locks cycle.
Takes about 30 seconds.

30 seconds? Wow! Probably explains why ours never worked :beerchug:

Want to thank you for the information about holding the button down. I had little bit of trouble getting a good connection while jumping the wires.I held the button down for more than 30 seconds and it now does work for the doors. It still will not open the trunk but thats OK ,the button in the glove box works as does the key. Thanks again. :beerchug:

Well it worked for two days ,it quit again. I haven't tried to reprogram yet but I think one of the componets must be the problem. Is it the wireless key fob or the receiver in the car? Any suggestions?

Its most likely the FOB. Take it apart and clean the button contacts,
make sure the battery and contacts are good and try again.

It is most likely the receiver.

Those receivers are sluggish, inconsistent and problematic to say the least.

The first year for Oldsmobile keyless was '89 on the CS. It was first available on the "88" and "98" cars in '90.

They re-engineered the system for the '92 model year as evident by the different placement of the buttons on the remotes:

Image

People had to have complained. Can you imagine having one of each car?

Make sure you have the correct ones because they are not interchangeable.

When I bought my '90 TS I asked the owner where the remotes were. He said, "The car does not have keyless" LOL I think the system was so problematic that people just lost track of the remotes.

BTW you do not have to hold the button down for 30 seconds to program. When you touch the two wires together to initiate programming the power locks and trunk will cycle. Then push and hold the unlock button on the remote until the locks and trunk cycle again, then the remote is programmed.

carcheology: you gave very accurate instructions for reprogramming. i used a paper clip to jump the pins and the locks/trunk did not cycle. i should say that i can get the doors to all lock and unlock using the key in the door. i just did not get a repsonse when i jumped the pins. any suggestions? also, i live in coomerce twp. where are you located.

Hello retroren,

We know each other from another forum

My notifications are not working from the forum so sorry for the delayed reply.

I used two #4 finish nails to jump the terminals, but then one day I realized that a door courtesy light connector was the same as the program connector so I made this:

Image

Just plug it in and then unplug; easier and much more confident connection.

If you jump the wires and the locks/trunk did not cycle your receiver is bad. The easiest used ones to pull are from the N body cars; Pontiac 6000, Cutlass Ciera and Buick Century. On those cars they are located in the trunk on top of the left rear wheel well.

hello again I'm back at it with the keyless remote problem on my 91 SSE. I have located the module it is behind the little Bonneville emblem above the glove box.You have to remove the metal glove box bracket to get at it. I have not been able to find a new or used module to try. Here is what happens, when I jump the wires to program the locks all cycle but I do not think the trunk is. When I push the unlock on the remote the locks cycle again as described in the procedure. When I disconnect the jumper the remote will not work. I have tried to program many times, sometimes the locks will cycle more than one time when the wires are jumped.I have removed the module and checked the connections. Does this sound like the module is at fault? When the remote was working it would not open the trunk but the button in the glove box does.

The module fails quite a bit. I believe the one I have in mine is out of an olds.

Yes, this is exactly what they do. I have about 30 of these modules from salvage yards. Every time I find one that works it eventually starts getting slugging, inconsistent and problematic.

It is really annoying.
