Can the motor and trans be pulled together thru the top, or would this be a bad idea?

I don't know the feasibility or wisdom in such a move, but most everyone I have seen making a move like that usually just drops the entire subframe out of the bottom.

Yes its possible, but it would be MUCH more difficult.
