Steering Rack Removal HELP!!

Post by dudatmello »

I'm trying to pull the steering rack from my 2000 Bonneville SSEI without lowering the subframe. I have looked around the forum but haven't got a clear answer as to how to accomplish this. I've removed the two bolts from the subframe but having trouble removing the two nuts from the steering rack. I wanted to know what size are the p/s nuts and the best way to remove them. And what else needs to be removed after the subframe bolts and power steering line nuts. Someone please give me a detailed process....Please!!!!

The nuts are welded onto the subframe. You loosen the 2-18mm bolts and push them out of the hole enough so that you can lift the rack up.

I'm not aware of it being possible to remove the rack without lower the subframe. At the very least you'd need to remove the stabilizer bar. I can tell you from personal experience, just lower the subframe.

All you need to do is remove the Stabilizer bushing on the driver side and you can pull the rack out on that side. But I also had the end link disconnected on both sides. Also, remove the heat shield on top of rack to give it clearance. Just did this a couple days ago.
