Oil on Exhaust Smell

Post by komobu »

Hi;

I just picked up my first Supercharged Bonneville. It is a 2001 SSEi. I smell oil that is leaking onto the exhaust manifold and burning. When I raise the hood, I actually see some smoke wisping up from the front manifold, but nothing on the back. So I will replace the front, and rear while I am at it, valve cover gaskets. What I am curious about is if the supercharged manifolds have any leakage issues like the plastic manifolds did on the 3.8s. I just got the car and it has 160k on it. Should I look at replacing the intake manifold gaskets? Here is a few of quick pics I took:

Is there any other issues I should look for while I am there? Thanks for any advice / help

Hi, about the leak on exhaust manifold,I would get some degreaser and clean the area so it is fresh-- then you can have a better idea as to the origin of oil leak-- my guess is rocker cover gasket
you will have a better idea once the old leak is cleaned
poverty forces one to do unorthodox things

Yup, definitely valve cover gaskets. The supercharged motors also have the same issues, and it would be good to put in the updated aluminum lower intake gaskets. They now also make aluminum coolant elbows as well.

Thanks Nos4Blood70......I decided last night to replace the lower intake gaskets as well as the valve cover gaskets so I only have to do it one time. I ordered the aluminum 2nd gen felpro MS98014T set from ebay for 55 dollars. That was 20 dollars cheaper than the 'Zone.

Thanks for telling me about the aluminum elbows. I overlooked them and was thinking they only pertained to the Non Supercharged 3800s with the plastic manifolds. I will order them today.
