Car starts then dies

Post by zwicked1 »

I'm new to the forums and If I missed a topic about this please advise. I've looked through so many topics that my eyes are bleeding. :banghead:

I have a 2000 SLE Bonne. Car ran great when I parked it after work. Got up next morning and it started then it dies right away.
It did this several times. It did finally start and stay running but very rough and had to feather the pedal for it to stay running. It ran for a few minutes then it died again. Back to it starting then stalling right away after that. I just bought this car a month ago and I dont recall ever hearing my fuel pump like I do now. Its a loud humming.

I have not done any test yet but will be in the morning. There is no service engine light on yet.

Was hoping for some advice.

Thanks

Welcome. Just sayin', the car is an SLE. Things to check would be fuel pressure, fuel filter, and crank position sensor.

Thank you.

With the key on I pushed in the Schrader valve and very little fuel dripped out. I tried it a few times and no fuel at all came out.
Is that a good indication the pump is bad? I did check all the relays and they are ok.

Where is the fuel filter located on this car? Is it easy to replace?

When you turn the key to ACC, can you hear the fuel pump prime?

Replace the fuel filter first if yes, it is cheaper and easier. This write up is for a 2005 GXP model, but will apply to your SLE.

Thank you for the link.

I can hear what sounds like the fuel pump for about 15 seconds then shuts off. Is there any other type of pump in the rear end of these cars?

Thanks

The fuel pump runs immediately after key is turned to ON for about 1 second.

After the key is on for 40 seconds approx, the load leveling pump for the rear shocks runs
to pump air into the shocks to stabilize them. It runs for maybe 5-15 seconds depending on
the pressures it senses.

Well it was the mass air flow sensor. Car runs great now. What I find odd is that I had no fuel pressure at the Schrader valve till i fixed this.

Anyway thanks all for your help.

Good to hear the car is running well again. The flaky MAF may have been messing with fuel supply.
