ZZP CAI
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the ZZP Cold Air Intake that's designed for the Grand Prix, but says will fit a 2000+ Bonneville with a slight modification? I'm thinking about getting one, but I want to know what exactly you have to modify before it goes in. Not really sure I wanna spend $250 on a box and then start by accidently breaking it. I might get flak for this here, but if we are talking STRICTLY about performance/$.. Just put a cone on the throttle body. The M90 turns all air post blower into magma.
If you have $250 to blow on a intake, go with Intense's tried and true FWI.

I would do the FWI, but I just don't trust the plastic keeping back the water that could splash up in there. I'd rather have a box that somewhat protects it and looks nice under the hood.nos4blood70 wrote:I might get flak for this here, but if we are talking STRICTLY about performance/$.. Re: ZZP CAI
I used to have the part numbers, but i had a pretty bada$$ setup on my bonneville and also on a buddy's GP. I used Spectre aluminum pipe bits and some couplers. You will need a 4-3.5" reducer, a 35 degree bend and a 22 degree bend from spectre and of course a 4" coupler with a cone of your choice. Granted, this was on a N/A motor at the time (bonneville) so YMMV, but nothing a hacksaw/pvc mach-up can't fix. I will attach a picture if i can find one. much cheaper, and highly effective. I bunged it for an IAT. The cone filter had a hard-piping setup to an emptied out fog light on the driver's side. direct cold air when moving, toasty air when sitting... not always ideal but it worked wonders and was easy to keep from being flooded.

Thing is though, NA cars love the cold air. You can't really effectively cool the incoming air in a blower car without an intercooler.

Re: ZZP CAI
Agreed, but for blower whine, there is nothing better than some big ol' metal piping for resonance and an open cone. I'm guessing that's really what hes shooting fornos4blood70 wrote:Thing is though, NA cars love the cold air. Re: ZZP CAI
In that case, you are 100% correct. With the FWI, the whole bumper becomes like an echo chamber for the whine. Hahaha

Re: ZZP CAI
So if the cone is down in that open area, it's going to be free from water? I really don't want to suck in water and break my engine. That's the last thing I need, after everything I've fixed. I just want something that'll make a little extra hp, get some nice noise, look decent, and function decent. The one I showed earlier had a tray for the pcm, where else would I put it with a FWI?

Re: ZZP CAI
The FWI comes with a tray as well.
If it helps, I ran an FWI on my car for almost 3 years, and my car doesn't have the lower splash shield. You could literally kneel down and grab the filter with your hands. It was completely exposed. Never had a single issue, but obviously I also didn't do dumb things like gun it through deep puddles. From what I've read, even if you go into a deep puddle, the engine will simply stall out from air starvation long before it even sucks up any water.

Water is not an issue for FWI. If water levels are high enough to cause issues, you shouldn't be driving your car. It might even be floating away on you.

Re: ZZP CAI
+1 on water not being an issue. Not sure how the 00-05's are, but on mine I have my filter in the old area that was occupied by the charcoal canister, so just like Carl's I can see mine right at the bottom of the bumper. No issues with water, mud, or the other elements so far.

In a 2000-2005 with the lower splash shield intact as well as the wheel well liner, the filter is pretty much completely shielded.

What about with an extreme amount of rain while driving?Wes wrote:Water is not an issue for FWI. If water levels are high enough to cause issues, you shouldn't be driving your car. It might even be floating away on you.

Re: ZZP CAI
There have been hundreds, if not thousands of FWI kits installed, and posted on these forums alone. I cannot recall an issue when the person had the stock fender lining still in place.

I never had issue even in the craziest of rain.
If you're really worried, just go with the cone on the throttle body route.

Re: ZZP CAI
Is the soft hose they offer any good on being heat resistant, or can you find a hard tubing for the same job?

Re: ZZP CAI
Don't worry about heat, the blower will just turn the incoming air into a heat wave anyways. My FWI would heatsoak quickly just like the factory airbox unless the car was constantly moving. I was watching IATs on my Aeroforce.

Re: ZZP CAI
Okay, so really I could take the box out and put a cone and tube in and it would be basically the same thing? The fender one is just to get fresh air from the outside to the filter easier I'm guessing, by its location?

Re: ZZP CAI
The principle behind the fender well intake is that the fender well has cooler non engine bay heat soaked air, which would be great if it wasn't processed through a heat gun before it reached the combustion chambers.
