Can't get parking brake cable back on rear calipers.

Post by cpilkington »

I was able to pull the parking brake cable off the rear calipers when I was cleaning and inspecting the rear calipers, but the parking brake cables have springs to the end of the cable and I cannot get the cable back on the caliper. I was looking for the equalizer to loosen the cables but it appears to be tucked above the exhaust under a metal plate.

This is a time sensitive issue as I'm delivering this car in a few days to my daughter. I'm two cables and a brake bleed away from being finished but I cannot get the cables back onto the caliper. I need some advice. :dontknow: :helpsmilie: :banghead:

Thanks,
Chris

I use 2 sets of vise grips. One on the end of the cable, and the other on the spring. Pull the spring back, then use the other vise grip to guide the cable onto the caliper. It may take a few tries.

If you're lucky, you may get by with just one vise grip on the end of the cable. Hook the spring on the opening to the lever, and guide it in that way.

I got two near rear calipers and I agree this isn't fun. I had a friend help with this, we used two vise grips and a lot of sailor language. It sucks but eventually youll get it. Archon has the right idea! Good luck!

When I had to do it (new calipers on both cars) it was a real treat (read: sarcasm). I think I used a trim removal tool on the spring with a vice grips on the cable end. This was several years ago though, so my memory is a little foggy.

Tool like this:
