HO2 codes leads to PCM + fuel filler neck - sadness

Post by rmmartel »

Finally got tired of looking at the service engine soon light and had another round of diagnostics done on the car to track down the HO2 codes that were being set. After the easy stuff was ruled out I am being told the PCM has an internal fault. With the scan tool connected to the car they are telling me what the PCM says it is doing with the heater circuit for the downstream HO2 sensor is not what it is really doing. Sensor checks out, harness checks out....

I am being told that a GM PCM for this car is around $850.00. They don't install remanufactured units. Have the computers gotten that expensive for the cars? Then the unit has to be programmed which is something I'd not be able to do. (really missing my old cars right now.)

All told for the PCM replacement and labor is $1,150.00. Which strikes me as high...but I am cheap. Are they out of line on that repair?

Was also told I need to replace the fuel filler neck: setting a code for a bad evap seal and the current neck has been perforated by rust - seems that fuel filler neck is wickedly expensive, too. Their price on that was in excess of $600.00 - but when I see an on-line price for the neck being $491.99 the $600 repair doesn't seem so out of hand.

At least the car still runs well.

Another PCM could probably be sourced from Harofreak00 if he has any, or Morad parts. For tons cheaper.

Not sure on the filler neck.

Rockauto has the filler neck for $323.79 Part number 25727011.
They have the PCM for $401.89 AC delco part number 12587465
I haven't personally worked on a GXP but the pcm does not take very long to swap out. IMHO, I would get a second opinion.

If i did get my hands on a PCM - what's up with the necessary programming?

I have a PCM for $50. It takes 30 minutes to program, and you can do it yourself.

Same affair as the L67 pretty much, with the PCM at the airbox.

Additionally, $300 for labour seems out of line. Yes, that probably includes programming time, but that still seems high.

I had the impression that it wasn't and over tough thing to swap. This is the first car I've had in a long time that I don't have a set of shop manuals for.
