Soon Farewell to the Bonneville

Post by Grimm »

It's been a while since I've been on here. This has been a great site with good members and information. I've really enjoyed my time with the B. Other than the intake leaks I can't complain about the car. With 173K miles she still runs strong. I still enjoy the looks of the car, and have actually toyed with the idea of fixing the issues to keep her a few more years. But in the end, the miles and the list of issues (gas fill rust, vacuum leak somewhere, broken oil pressure sensor, faulty fuel gauge, AC not working, barely any heat, blower that barely works) don't feel worth it, and the itch for something different prevails :). It's been a good run, but a 2-3 year old Buick LaCrosse or Ford Taurus are in my near future most likely.

Well, I can't tell you how many times I said all that about the ole '92 that is now mine (bought it new in '91 for the wife). It's sitting in the garage at the moment waiting for me to decide if I'm going to fix it, sell it or scrap it. If I get the money and find the right powertrain, it'll get a new life. If not, it's either sold to a club member or the scrap yard. - BC

I can't speak too loudly as I know exactly how the new car bug is BUT the old car will save LOTS of money. I know my 1997 did. Just put gas in and go. Your issues seem pretty minor compared to some of the Bonnevilles I've seen fixed up.

Good luck with whatever you decide, but you know that old 3.8 has another 173k in her, can't say as much for the trans though :P

Off topic @ Bill, whats wrong with ole Green? Thought you were still driving it?

The ole car is making a very strange "ticking/rattle(?)" sound. Haven't been able to figure out if it's engine, torque converter, or transmission. It doesn't change much with RPM change, so it's a real puzzle. I've had four other guys that I respect what they think listen to it and they just scratch and shake their heads. I do good just to change the oil and wash the cars these days, so I'm not much good at doing hands-on trouble shooting. I need to remove the serpentine belt first, then take it from there. - BC

Take the bolts out between the flex plate and TC. Start it and see if noise is still there. That will localize it to either motor or TC / trans.
