siphoning gas

Post by coop8070 »

I have a bad fuel pump and need to drop my tank in my 94 lesabre, that has a full tank of gas. I tried siphoning with a hose through the filler but only sucked fumes. Any ideas, the FSM only says to siphon the gas, but doesn't explain how.

Maybe a smaller hose. Also you can buy a siphon pump at Harbor Freight for a few bucks that might have a small enough hose. I siphoned out of my 94 and you just have to work it IIRC

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

So you are saying there is no restrictor strainer and I need to just shove it in further, the hose I was using was flexible and I think it was bunching up in there.

Pretty sure there is some sort of screen in there to prevent stealing gas. Not sure how to get around it...

I couldn't get the gas siphoned out of my tank until I disconnected the filler neck. I gave up on trying to get it to siphon from the fill cap end of the filler neck.
I was replacing the tank anyway, so the filler hoses had to come off.
As I recall there wasn't a screen but a baffle instead.
Maybe you will have better luck than I did.

All you got to do is put a pan beneth the fuel filter, disconnect it, and turn the car over a few times. Wait for it to die, and keep turning it over, no more than a few seconds at a time, then wait for a sec for the starter to cool off. Each time you do this you'll get a good squirt come out of the fuel filter line.

There's a way to cross some wires and just get the pump to run for however long you want, but you'll have to look that up.

Solved. I disconnected the filler hose at the bottom, inserted a hose a few feet in and proceeded to use a siphon pump. By the way, there is a very easy way to run the pump non stop without the key on. There is a little green single unplugged wire connector behind the battery. If you jumper it to the positive post the pump will run continually until unjumpered. To bad in my case the pump was completely dead.

Yeah at least you figured it out! Are you going to drop your tank and replace the pump?

Yep, already did, I went with a Bosch pump because I have had good luck with other Bosch parts on my other cars. I used my knees as a tank Jack, fun hour getting the stupid tank in with no help Lol. But it runs good now :) except for the a/c clutch that just came apart. My Volkswagen has gotten a lot of use lately...
