Car cutting off at random
Car cutting off at random
I have a 2000 Bonneville SSEi and the car is cutting off at random. Sometimes is will start back right away but most of the time it takes 5 to 10 minutes to start back. When problem first started didn' know if it was fuel or spark related but found it was not sparking. No check engine light is coming on. Any ideas?

Re: Car cutting off at random
The usual culprit is the crank position sensor. It's frustrating because it doesn't always seem to throw a code.

a bad MAF sensor will do that too. Disconnect the MAF and run it a day or 2 to see if its still cutting off... if it doesnt.. then thats pretty much nails it as a bad Crank sensor or ICM.
Re: Car cutting off at random
Top 2 things i have experienced/seen cause this to happen.
* Crank Pos Sensor. Shop can diagnose it with a scan tool when it occurs.
* Test fuel pressure, could also be a failing fuel pump.

I had this same issue. I HIGHLY recommend replacing your fuel filter first. That was my culprit. Quick easy and cheap fix. Make sure you relieve the pressure on the fuel line first!

Re: Car cutting off at random
all are great suggestion but the crankshaft position sensor causes this on many other makes and models with the 3800 engine.
i can recall watching a neighbor with a chevy lumina with 3800 go up the road, car cut off while driving, he'd throw it in neutral then crank it back up and keep on trucking.
