FML. Did my rusty 85 Buick have this issue? Other than from rust coming through, no. My 22 year old Bonneville? No. 180k mile 04 Grand Am? Nope. Minivan with previously poorly sanded scratches from a deer collision that were sprayed over? No signs of it. I've never had paint just go AWOL before.
I found a chunk of paint missing from the trailing end of the rear driver side wheel well yesterday on the G8. The edges around it feel like they could peel up pretty easy. There's no damage to the metal, so I don't know if something hit it. But I figure it's most likely that the paint cracked on the edge of the fender lip and a bubble had worked its way out.
Any ideas on a decent DIY fix, or how much a shop might charge to fix it? It's a fairly inconspicuous spot, so touch up paint might mask it OK, but I'm afraid of more peeling.

Yep, both side same spot last week. I would get a close look at the other side if I were you..
Remover ANY lose painting the area pick at it if you have to, than clean the surface rust off, its not rusting the metal yet. Its still only on the "sacrificial coating" on the galvanized surface (don't panic yet) I used what's called "metal conditioner" automotive paint product it cleaned the surface with just a little light scrub and it looked like new metal again. As a temp fix I touched it up right away, but the panel needs a respray as soon as possible (waiting on warmer weather)

For some reason, the paint on these Holden cars is very "hard" or "brittle" as my body shop friend told me when he was working on mine years back. Meaning, a good impact with an errant rock, creates a larger than normal chip and/or chunk taken down to the base.
But yea, us GTO owners suffer some of the same issues.

Yes holden paint is VERY brittle. I hate it!hood bumper and roof all had bad chipping within a year, and the new paint I put on has held up perfect for years since...

Be careful not to use near painted surfaces because it is an acid and will burn the paint if not removed quickly.
The only listing of the BASF stuff was $60 for a quart.

Yeah definitely acid based. But you'd be fine for what you need, your just cleaning and wiping dry nothing prolonged. I know its not cheap, but neither is your car.
You could try the other stuff to, might work the same or close.

I've never tried to fix anything but little chips. Can an area like this be tackled with a pen type touch up stick? Or will that leave too much unevenness? Maybe mask around and spray the middle, and fill in the edges with a stick?
I checked the other side and it looks fine.

Definitely NOT a paint and body man here, but wouldn't a little Dawn, clean water and distilled white vinegar do the same? I've had great success with distilled white vinegar in place of metal prep the few times I've painted. - BC

After all the loose stuff is off, and the rust/contamination is gone, that should stop the peeling back. You can do a light scuff sanding, (anything to course will cut through the galvanized coating and be worse for you. Touching up is temp because is can still peel off and/or rust there is no real way around it if you love your car, it needs a respray..
