Hood Question!!

Post by SSEiFreak »

I am getting ready to do a hood fabrication for my 00' SSEi and want to know what everybody thinks. I am doin a hood cowl and would like to know would a 2" or 2 1/2" cowl be better. I know at some point too much cowl jus doesnt make sense, but is this one of those cowls? Thx ahead of time for the feedback!!

Do you have a pre-fab cowl already that you're molding onto the hood or are you making it? Pictures?

I'm also looking into modifying my hood as well, but havn't decided if I just want to run with hood vents or some sort of cowl. I would say 2/2.5" would be look good, 3" might be okay but getting closer to overkill IMO.

1/2" won't be that different I don't think. I'd probably go 2 1/2", be sure and post some pics after! I'm interested to see how it turns out.

Can you mock one out of cardboard? That might give you a good idea.

I think it can look good if it is subtle. Think G8 hood scoops?

While those first two hoods in the pictures Andrew posted are done very nicely and with a great deal of effort, I don't think they work with what a Bonneville is.

Just my two cents.

This one is my favorite! I really would love to make one just like this someday. Only difference would be I would start with a fiberglass hood, which runs about $227 +, and maybe get a used 93-97 T/A hood to cut the scoops out of. (http://www.carparts.com/details/Pontiac ... 7Aodg3kAZA)

I like them too, its just those scoops are so common. I like the fact that its super rare to see a bonnie with a hood cowl on it.... Plus im an old school muscle car guy so i love cowl hoods lol.

here is your biggest problem.....your stock hood is Alum.

good luck getting something to stick (and last) to the factory hood. the bond will fail with time and heat.

The aluminum hood is one of the biggest reasons I keep looking for a nice, factory styled bolt/tape-on type. While the two examples shown above look beautiful as of now, nothing is worse than seeing your hard work and money feel for naught when that pretty paint starts to crack. I put a WS6 style fiberglass hood on my GP and a couple years later it began to crack. I dont think it was the hood itself but the paint cracking looks just as bad. I've made the point before that the vast majority of factory hood treatments are bolt/tape-on, and as such I dont mind how they look as long as the choice of size/style goes with the theme of the car. Since my car already has plenty of stick-on cladding along the sides and a bolt-on rear spoiler, I dont think a similar hood treatment is out of line. Just my nickel's worth. ;)
