sub box in a 98

Post by 93fs »

Trying to decide if this is worth it or not. Ive always had a system in every vehicle Ive owned and since this is my first car with a trunk Ive been excited to get a good pair of 12s and a good amp back there. Well I noticed the back seat dosnt fold down, just the armrest hole opens up. My main question is will this allow enough air to move into the cabin to make a good thump. I'm most likely getting two sundown sa12s and a sundown 1200d amp in a slot ported box. Kinda pricy but I really like the quality of there equipment and the shop I'm getting the stuff from is giving me a pretty good deal on all of it. I typically just listen to rock at a moderate volume but I do like the big bass every now and then so these should handle both well. Anyway has anyone on here had a decent setup in a trunk of this body style and could you actually hear the sub's or just a ton of trunk rattle. And I wouldn't mind keeping the factory Bose head unit if possible but I have a new 300$ alpine just sitting on a shelf that I can throw in if it will be night and day. Any thoughts?

I get a decent amount of rattling in my car. The entire trunk was lined with flashing take before i bought it. But you definitely can hear plenty of bass. You will probably want to get a decent amount of sound deadener for trunk, doors, and roof with the setup your looking at

Thats fine I figured I would need some dynamat or something of that nature to quiet it down a little but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna sound like the sub's were in the car next to me you know what I mean lol

i have a 98 also. Just like most trunk setups youll have some rattle for sure unless ya face the subs and post forward and use something to seal around the box off such as great stuff etc. The arm rest hole will help sound get into the cab alot more. A prob i did run into at first when i started the ol audio stuff on mine was the stock 6x9s would bottom out due to the extra air my sub was moving lol. It was just a single mtx 12 in a ported box, no sealing or anytging. So bewhere of that possibility, im not sure if anynody else has ran into that, and those SA 12s will move alot more air then my lil 12 did. I ended up going bigger and dropping my rear stage completly lol.

I had 3 12s in my 97 and then later switched out to 2 15s and I can definitely say that you will have enough air flow for a nice bass response. The 15s made my trunk rattle well enough that you could actually hear my car coming from like 2 or 3 blocks away depending on how loud I had it. I am about to downsize to 2 12s in my Bonneville now though. Because I want a little more trunk space. Which includes more air flow.

I have 2 12s running off a 600 w peak amp so maybe 150-175 going to each of them and with a good tune and good 3 or 4 way6x9s and good 2 or 3 way doors, its more than enough. I don't amp my rears or doors but I'm gonna amp em and throw an electronic crossover in it and it'll sound even better. But with my subs tuned how they are, I have some rattle but its not enough to really hear it from a long way away, you gotta be within 5 feet to really hear it, but inside the car sounds great. And, I don't have any dynamat. And as for the head unit, I'd go with the alpine, the factory head unit is close to 15 16 years old, the alpine will probably give better clarity and less distortion.

When bonnes wanna rattle they will lol. With my dc xl 15 on the saz1500@.7 daily, nox sealed off fron the trunk i had almost zero rattle from the trunk. The most rattle i had was the pass side door trim and the heat sheild on the catconverter lol. Oh and my grill and hood latch when i had the hood open. Basshead problems lol

Lol well that makes me feel better. Now the problem is finding a good box. I really dont want to build one and the prefab the audio shop offered was only 3.2 cubes and they call for around 4. That and most prefabs seem to be pretty chincy

And if I go to change to my other head unit does anyone know if I need a special adapter to keep the Bose amp working? I know in my 95 trans am I just used the standard gm adapter and it still powered the factory amp but idk if this will be the same situation

yeah im not a big fan of prefab boxes. Just seem a lil too bulky and never the right tuning. If you have a way to build a box i could prob help with a design.

haha gotcha but ya might be suprised with them SAs. I havent heard the sa only the nightshades and Zs. But they should do good for sure. If ya get gutsy and feel like attempting a built box feel free to pm me. I can give some pointers, info etc. I have a few good boxes under my belt :) and i just might already know alllll about the trunk size you have hahaha. I can tell ya the biggest i was able to build and get in and out of the trunk opening was 36"x17"x15.5" and iirc i had to shave a little of the top edge of that box to fit into the trunk. All braced, double baffle, fiberglassed insides etc. I have 4 10s now with a little bigger box i had to build inside the trunk. Tuned nice n low at around 26hz lol plays the lows *dang* good but not super loud musically. But im diggin the lows right now so lovin it til i get bored then onto the next lol.

I have just a single Kenwood pro 12 running off an 800 watt pioneeer mono amp in a crappy walmart box. I listen to more metal, so it's not necessarily the bass drops like in rap or hip hop, but when I do listen to rap, it's enough to make my whole car rattle and shake inside. I wouldn't want any more bass, and my wife always makes me turn the sub output down when she rides along hahaha. You'll definitely have plenty of bass in the cabin :)

This one looks like its almost perfect for the sa12s and it should fit in the trunk with no issue but its getting it into the trunk I'm concerned with. Idk how to figure what will fit through the opening

thats a good question. I clicked on the link and it dont have any measurments stating the size of the box. Hmm i suppose if ya could find out the box dimensions you could make a mock up box out of card board to get an idea before you make the purchase. Biggest ive got in my trunk iirc was 36" wide,17" high and 15.5" deep. So if that box is smaller in every way then id guess you would be able to fit it. But then again some of them prefab dual 12 boxes have a pretty good depth to them. And i forgot to look but is that price shipped or do ya have to pay shipping? That wouldnt be too cheap if you had to pay for that on top of the price of the box n i could possibly find something a lil cheaper and closer to ya. Possibly.

That price does include shipping and the only reason I'm very interested in this one is because it meets sundown specs and theres a couple YouTube videos of people that bought it and actually got it so the company must not be entirely shady
