VATS Question. Solved.

Post by SSEiMan01 »

So I think the starting issue I'm having on the 96 SSEi is either the VATS going out, or the janky remote starter on this car. I'm going to bypass VATS first since that's bound to cause a problem eventually anyway at the mileage this car has. (The starter didn't change my issue.)

So, I ohmed out the chip in the key at my work, 9.55 ohms. My question is how do I make a resistor that has the same (or close from what I read) ohms as the key? I found a thread that explains the bypass pretty well with the exception of making the resistor, I'm a bit fuzzy when it comes to some electrical stuff, though I admit I'm learning as time goes on. So if someone can give me instruction or maybe pictures of how to make the resistor and at the correct ohms that would be awesome! Thanks!

Re: VATS Question

If it has remote start, I'm pretty sure they had to bypass the VATS for it to work. I don't know about making a resistor, but the PO of my 96 had a remote start on it and there was a resistor just tied onto the wires which fell off when I touched it. I ended up just putting the wires back together and I had no more problems.

I'm thinking the people who installed it either did the bypass wrong or not at all. Because the remote for the remote starter sets off the factory alarm a lot, and yesterday wouldn't even start the car. The factory remote is fine and I'm having this issue still when I use either key.

Which is why I want to try the bypass first, because that may be the issue with the remote start too, which I like and would like to keep if I can.

I just looked under the dash, found the remote start brain, and also found the two white wires in the orange sheath. Those white wires do not appear to have been bypassed with a resistor like they *should* be....

*sigh*

I've written this up I don't know how many times. It's not in techinfo yet but search for me and vats bypass and all of your full (and I do mean FULL) questions will be answered.
2005 GXP - White Gold Pearl, no mods...yet.
2000 SSEi - Resurrection in progress. Built L67 w/L32 fuel rail, ported heads, and cam. Camaro front brake system, GXP cluster, and much more in planning.

Re: VATS Question

Post by SSEiMan01 »

I'm asking because I couldn't find the info I needed in search. And after finding that my VATS had never been bypassed before under the column I decided to get a resistor (10 ohm with 5% tolerance) and wire that in, now the car won't start at all. So, yeah, any help as to what I did wrong would be appreciated. Like I said I only go so far with electrical stuff so I need to learn and get help.

Edit:Temporarily spliced the factory white wires back together until I find more info.

I do not know how the theft systems are put in. But I do know how my standard VATS system needed repair after 4 years of having the light on.

I believe your measurement of 9.55 Ohms is wrong. I think it's .955 KOhm/955 ohms. Did the meter say the scale was Kohm? That would 955 Ohms.
But it's between the 887 ohm and 1130 ohm VATS from the 15 the factory used.

I'd suggest you take your keys to Radio Shack, ask them to read the resistance for you to determine if it's 887 or 1130.

Mine was 887 ohm and I used a 5 pack of 220 ohm resistors and put 4 of them in a series end-to-end. Gave me 880. I soldered them to one of the white wire ends. Put shrink tubing over it long enough to cover it all. Soldered the other end on. Pulled the shrink tube over. Heated it. And it was done. I did check with a test clip first to see if that started the car, before soldering it in. The little white wires were hard to strip without breaking the hairlike threads of copper. I put a little solder on each to hold the wires together before doing the rest of this work.

Resistor Value
Code
KOhms Value
1 0.402
2 0.523
3 0.681
4 0.887
5 1.130
6 1.470
7 1.870
8 2.370
9 3.010
10 3.740
11 4.750
12 6.040
13 7.500
14 9.530
15 11.800

Re: VATS Question

Post by SSEiMan01 »

I'm assuming mine is #14 (9.530) the meter I used, as I said, read 9.550 on the 20k ohm setting just like the website I found in one of my searches on here that explains the process. It didn't say anything about 9.530 being 953 ohms.

Edit: I think I'm understanding what you mean however, back to the shack to get a package of 10k ohm resistors.
