Bad Motor Mount
Bad Motor Mount
I went in to Mavis Discount Tire today to get my Bonnie aligned because my steering wheel was cocked at about a 45 degree angle, give or take. While I was watching them do the alignment, the guy working on my car called me over and told me I have a bad motor mount. He said they don't fix those there, but I should get it fixed.
How much money should it be to fix/replace the motor mount?

If it is actually the "motor" mount then it would be this:

Re: Bad Motor Mount
He didn't specify which mount, and I'm pretty new to this stuff. So I don't really know.

Re: Bad Motor Mount
If it was in the front, it was the front trans mount, as there is no front engine mount.
The hockey puck is the original solid mount, but I've found that 3" boat rollers are cheaper and easier to find, and you don't need to drill the hole in them either. Just get an 8" long 1/2" bolt, some washers, an old swaybar bushing, and a locking nylon insert nut.

Real easy to find hockey pucks for 75 cents each up here in the Great White North, ehharofreak00 wrote:The hockey puck is the original solid mount, but I've found that 3" boat rollers are cheaper and easier to find, and you don't need to drill the hole in them either. Sheesh, I paid like $3 apiece at Sports Authority here, and I'm in the "land of hockey"...repinS wrote:Real easy to find hockey pucks for 75 cents each up here in the Great White North, ehharofreak00 wrote:The hockey puck is the original solid mount, but I've found that 3" boat rollers are cheaper and easier to find, and you don't need to drill the hole in them either. Re: Bad Motor Mount
I used the hockey pucks on my car, and a boat roller on a friend's. Between the two, I'd also suggest the boat roller. Not having to drill the holes, and making sure they're lined up is a big plus as far as a time saver. The roller is a little softer rubber, making it easier to dampen vibrations for those sensitive to it.

Yeah I was gonna ask, is the vibrations difference hugely discernible between the two options?
Re: Bad Motor Mount
Is the reason my car vibrates at idle because of the bad motor mount? And would anything really bad happen if I didn't fix it for a while or is it a must fix?

You run a risk of cracking the trans housing, IIRC.

I tried the hockey pucks alone to start, and didn't care for the vibration at all. I used some neoprene washers, and the bushings from an old endlink, and still found it too much for my taste. By using various rubber grommets, I was able to get it to a level I could live with. I was able to use fewer with the boat roller, and the vibration is slightly, but noticeably less.

^ That's so funny to watch. "Shake it!" LOL
Re: Bad Motor Mount
Is this a fairly easy thing to do? If it is, can somebody give me a list of supplies to buy? I think I'd rather go with the boat roller idea.
EDIT: Or should I buy one of the mounts suggested earlier in the thread?

I went through several stock style mounts including a supposed solid one from auto zone. They all fail, its a bad design.
I did the boat roller as well no complaints here

Re: Bad Motor Mount
Can someone please give a detailed parts list for the Roller Mount? I have the pucks but would really like to have a back up if possible. And Where in the Heck do I find 7 1/2" - 8 1/2" bolts? Lowe's and HD don't have them.

Re: Bad Motor Mount
wolf I got my bolt and washers and nut all at Lowes very cheaply I must say, the roller is a new design that I had not yet heard about I had to order the pucks from up north but it was very easily assembled and works extremely well especially when you get into it you can tell the difference!
