increasing knock retard

Post by parkaveman83 »

What can cause knock retard to start increasing. Used to only get 2-3deg when it was shifting and 0 when I'd get wide open. Now its hitting 5-6 pretty regularly wide open. And usually as soon as it gets into boost its starts 1-2deg of knock retard. Its gettibg cooler outside and its only getting worse. Basicly stock car with 128, 000 miles. Gonna dchange the fuel filter soon.. but it doesn't run any diff cold. And pulls just ashard as it did when I bought it.

Motor mounts possibly, specifically the front trans mount. Thats my first guess and should be easy to check.

Hadnt really thought about that. Could the supercharger coupler cause it when its running? I think I hear the rattle whenu shut the motor off that means it's starting get bad.

cold air=Dense air.. more air, more KR. could just be getting leaner with the colder air.

Hot air causes knock. Plugged air filters don't help any, old plugs, different fuel, (remember, winter blend is coming), malfunctioning sensors...

I've had this issue for a while. I sprayed some brake cleaner at the EGR stove pipe, under the Throttle Body and found a good sized vacuum leak, which will cause KR. Replaced it when a new one from GM, problem solved.
Brake cleaner will help you determine if you have any vac leaks, get the stuff that does not leave a white residue if you want to try this. CRC in the green can works good.

The maintenance has prob not been great on this car. I've only had it for about 6000miles. I've done the oil and new air filter and gutted the air box when I did it. I'm gonna change the fuel filter soon. And try to throw plugs and wires at it and see what that does. It has 128, 000 miles on it. And doesn't seem like much of anything got changed on it before I got it. I have been running 93 in it except for a tank 5 fillups ago. I think I put 87 in it by acident. Trying to meet my wife at the er at 1am and I wasn't thinking to clearly. After that it the knock never went back to where it was. It did go down from 8-9 to 5-7 it does now.

605's are 1 step colder, TR55's are stock heat range. Autolite 104's are 2 steps colder.

Is it possible that the cat is starting to clog up some? When I first got it it would only get up to about 7.5-7.7 into boost in first gear. Now its getting more like 8.5 in first wot. I know the exhaust around the motor sucks on these cars. Just didn't know how much the cat played into that
